City of Jackson partners with AARP to host pickleball clinic

JACKSON, Tenn. — A new opportunity for seniors is coming to the Hub City.

The City of Jackson’s Parks and Recreation Department is partnering with AARP to have a pickleball clinic at the Westwood Tennis Center. AARP is doing a tour of these pickleball clinics and wanted to stop in Jackson on August 24 from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m.

“They reached out to us when they found out we were building a senior center and wanted to find some ways to partner with us. This was the first thing that they said. ‘We’re doing a pickleball tour. Can we come to Jackson?’,” said Christi David, park operations manager.

There will be three different sessions during each hour. The first two will simply be introductions to pickleball, and the final sessions will teach some skills and drills. AARP plans to keep partnering with the City of Jackson in the future.

“And again, this is targeted to our senior population. This is to help us get excited about our upcoming senior center. AARP is going to continue to partner with us in various ways for that. So we’re excited,” said David.

The sport of pickleball is rapidly growing throughout the country. It is an easy sport to get involved with and can help you get outside and active. Jackson is right there with the massive growth and is making the sport more available for residents than ever.

“We now currently have 18 outdoor courts which is the most municipal free courts available in the state of Tennessee. We will be adding, eventually, another 16 courts to North Park,” said David.

The pickleball clinic is completely free to attend. There will be paddles and pickleballs provided.

The clinic is open to the first 50 people to sign up.
