CHIEF CORLEY’S NOMINATION LETTER:
Chief Thom Corley has taken the Jackson Police Department to the next level by implementing new technologies and crime-fighting tools to combat violent crime.
Since becoming the chief. he has made preparing the next generation of leaders a priority by hosting retreats and actually teaching leadership to his first-line supervisors Chief Corley also started hosting quarterly meetings with the departments in rural West Tennessee to share technology and intel. These informal meetings have allowed chiefs and command staff from neighboring partners to meet and interact to help fight crime.
He continually demonstrates cutting-edge initiatives such as a place in the department for officers to rest between shifts and court or when needed during a shift for officer wellness.
Chief Corley partnered with the State of Tennessee Department of Labor to create an apprentice program for candidates 18 years of age but under 21 to increase recruitment for future law enforcement officers.
As a requirement for advancement within his department, he has initiated mandatory training to perform community interaction service to continue to improve the relationships between the community and his department.
He sends his Command Staff to nationally recognized leadership training such as the University of Chicago Leadership Academy to prevent violent crimes, support officers, and improve fairness and effectiveness in policing. For the last two years, Chief Corley has conducted a Command Staff Leadership Retreat for team building, expectations, and future development of upcoming leaders at the Department. He has also developed an internal leadership program to foster new supervisors for the Department.
Most recently Chief Corley was elected to the TACP Board to serve the 12th District representing Chester, Fayette, Hardeman, Haywood, Lauderdale, Madison, Shelby, and Tipton counties.
