Man sentenced for attempted first degree murder

Girtes Stewart Sentenced for Attempted First Degree Murder

On June 21, 2024, in the Circuit Court of Gibson County at Humboldt Law Court, Girtes Stewart, Jr. (49 years old) was convicted by a jury of Attempted First Degree Murder, Seven Counts of Felony Reckless Endangerment, and Employing a Firearm during the Commission of a Dangerous Felony.

On Monday, August 12, 2024, the Honorable Clayburn Peeples sentenced the Defendant to serve a total sentence of 26 years in the Tennessee Department of Corrections. Mr. Stewart was sentenced to 20 years for the Attempted First-Degree Murder; 2 years each on the 7 counts of Reckless Endangerment for a total of 14 years to run concurrent with the 20 years; 6 years at 100% Consecutive to the Attempted First-Degree Murder on the Employing a Firearm During the Commission of a Dangerous Felony. The total effective sentence is 26 years and Mr. Stewart was sentenced as a Range 1 offender due to not having a prior felony.

“Tennessee is top 10 in the country for women killed by men,” states Frederick H. Agee, District Attorney General. “This was a violent domestic act that involved not only a woman but children. By the grace of God no one was physically injured. Judge Peeples sent a strong message to violent domestic abusers with this sentence. Our office will continue to focus on efficiently removing violent offenders from Crockett, Gibson and Haywood counties.”
