West Tennessee to commemorate 9/11 with various events

JACKSON, Tenn. — Wednesday will mark the 23rd anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

In Jackson, a remembrance event and moment of silence will be held at McKellar-Sipes Regional Airport beginning at 7:30 a.m. The community is invited to participate in the ceremony, led by Kevin McCarthy, the TSA Deputy Federal Security Director for Tennessee. Madison County first responders, as well as TSA and McKellar-Sipes personnel will join the occasion to honor those who were affected.

In Bolivar, the city has planned a memorial breakfast, processional, and special program. The buffet-style breakfast will take place at Backwoods Restaurant, beginning at 6:30 a.m., and is open to all first responders. Responders will be responsible for the cost of their food. Beginning at 7:45 a.m., a processional will proceed to the fire department, where a special program open to the public will kick off at 8 a.m.

In the City of Dyer, opening ceremonies for their annual Patriot Day events will be held at the corner of Main Street and College Street, beginning at 6 p.m.

Finally, in Crockett County, a 9/11 Memorial Sea of Lights will be held to mark the anniversary. Lineup will begin at 7:30 p.m. at Friendship Elementary School, and the route will go through Friendship, Maury City, Bells, and Gadsden, before ending at Alamo Court Square. There, a prayer and moment of silence will be held following the sea of lights.

The public is invited to attend these events to honor the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives in the attacks.
