'Great to be under the lights' | Tennessee Football holds first scrimmage of fall camp

Head coach Josh Heupel spoke following the Vols' first fall scrimmage on Friday night.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee Football held its first scrimmage of fall camp on Friday night inside Neyland Stadium with its season opener against Chattanooga just three weeks away.

"It's great to be under the lights here in Neyland Stadium," head coach Josh Heupel said following the scrimmage. "Tonight we had a bunch of families that were out watching their sons compete, so it was a lot of fun."

The Vols held Dylan Sampson out for the scrimmage just to be careful, and Heupel was quick to note Karns graduate Desean Bishop's effectiveness during the scrimmage and said he ran hard and efficiently. Heupel also said he liked what he saw from fellow running back Peyton Lewis as he works his way back into contact situations.

Huepel said the quarterbacks showed great command of the offense, and he saw nice decision-making from Nico Iamaleava, even though he also saw some throws he was sure Iamaleava wanted back.

The head coach noted the defensive line was "relentless" and the defense played hard and physical as a whole.

The Vols also worked while wearing new helmet communication and headset technology as the team looked to find out how to use it most efficiently. The team also used tablets on the sidelines and simulated TV timeouts during the scrimmage to help the team and coaches get used to it.

Tennessee Football will continue its fall camp and scrimmage leading up to its home opener against Chattanooga on Saturday, Aug. 31 at Neyland Stadium.
