Netflix in the United States is getting another critically acclaimed international feature film in July 2024, with The Teachers’ Lounge (Das Lehrerzimmer) confirmed to be arriving on Netflix in the US beginning on Wednesday, July 17th, 2024.

Debuting at the Berlin International Film Festival last February, the movie eventually made its US premiere in December 2023 through a limited theatrical release. It’s since released on VOD platforms but will be making its SVOD debut via Netflix in the US.

The plot of the drama is about a dedicated and idealistic new teacher at a German middle school who faces a crisis when a series of thefts at the school leads to accusations and mistrust among parents, colleagues, and students. As she tries to mediate and resolve the situation, her position becomes increasingly desperate.

Leonie Benesch leads the cast, playing the role of Carla Nowak with the rest of the ensemble cast, including Eva Löbau, Michael Klammer, Rafael Stachowiak, Sarah Bauerett, and Kathrin Wehlisch.

The movie boasts a Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes with a 96% score based on well over 100 reviews from critics around the globe.

Michael O’Sullivan for the Washington Post gave the movie high marks in his review posted in January of this year, saying, “Teachers’ Lounge is far more than a conventional whodunit, though it does build a nice head of suspense as it grapples with themes of justice, doubt, and bias.”

Similarly, Peter Travers for ABC News concluded the movie was “A nail-biting thriller.”

The Teachers’ Lounge Comes to Netflix US as Part of the Sony Pictures Deal

The movie is coming to Netflix as one of the couple dozen plus that have come from the Sony Pictures Entertainment pay-one US deal that was struck back in April 2021 and has seen the majority of output from the distributors and its subsidiaries come to the service in the US. While most of the attention is put on Sony Pictures’ main theatrical releases, Netflix has also managed to scoop up the debuts for many titles from Sony Pictures Classics now, including The Teachers’ Lounge.

Some of the other titles Netflix has picked up in the first window from Sony Pictures Classics include Shortcomings, The Miracle Club, Freud’s Last Session, Living, and The Son.

This is one of several SVOD debuts Netflix has lined up for the United States throughout July 2024. Others include the new Sony Pictures theatrical release of Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, scheduled to land on July 22nd.

The Long Game and The Neon Highway will also debut on Netflix throughout the month of July 2024. On the international front and under a similar deal to The Teachers’ Lounge, Netflix will pick up the critically acclaimed Polish animated movie The Peasants beginning July 11th.
