Former NBA superstar Delonte West was arrested after a brief chase where police said they had to administer Narcan, according to a statement released by Fairfax County Police Department Thursday.

West, 40, was arrested in the 7200 block of Fairchild Drive in Groveton, Virginia after a brief police chase in which officers briefly lost sight of him.

Officers provided West with Narcan on the scene before he was taken to a nearby hospital after the medicine "did not have the desired effect," officials said. Narcan was given to West again, officials said it worked the second time around, and he was later released from the hospital and taken to the county's adult detention center.

West was issued a warrant for violation of conditions of release and charged with resisting arrest, police said. He is being held on bond.

West, a Maryland resident who previously played for the NBA's Boston Celtics, Seattle SuperSonics (later relocating to Oklahoma City), and others has had a long yet publicly documented struggle with his mental health since entering the limelight.

In 2022, West spoke with ABC's GMA3 discussing his efforts to combat bipolar disorder and his ongoing recovery.
