Man arrested after running from police in Put-in-Bay, striking woman in golf cart

Police say the 39-year-old man nearly ran into officers on multiple occasions during the chase that spanned much of the island.

PUT-IN-BAY, Ohio — A 39-year-old man was taken into custody in Put-in-Bay early on Sunday morning after running from police in his car and striking a golf cart, injuring a woman.

According to Put-in-Bay police, officers were responding to reports of a man beating a woman around 1:30 a.m. near Put-in-Bay School.

When they arrived they saw a man jump into a car who then drove toward them on Catawba Avenue at a high rate of speed.

As officers pursued the car, the suspect turned the wrong way onto Delaware Avenue, a one-way street and crashed into a golf cart, injuring a 29-year-old woman.

After continuing to flee the scene of the crash, the driver entered the parking lot of South Bass Island State Park, according to police.

After leaving the parking lot, the suspect came to a stop on Niagara Avenue where police were able to arrest him.

Throughout the pursuit, Put-in-Bay police say the suspect nearly ran into pursuing officers’ vehicles on multiple occasions.

Police say the suspect is from Marion, Ohio.

The victim of the crash with the golf cart, who was flown to the hospital with minor injuries, is from Lebanon, Ohio.

Police say the suspect does not have a valid driver’s license and was intoxicated.

He is facing multiple charges.
