Over the course of a freelance career spanning more than 15 years, she has reported on business, the economy and personal finance for numerous publications, including AOL, Fast Company, Inc., Money, MSNBC, NBC News, The New York Times, Slate, Time and Worth. 

Martha wrote the “Explainer” column for Slate’s financial site, The Big Money, and covered the Great Recession and its aftermath for AOL’s WalletPop, writing about job loss and financial hardship, as well as trends in consumer credit, debt and spending.

While her areas of expertise are wide-ranging—from the job market to real estate to business travel—a significant amount of her work has focused on consumer behavior, with much of that centered around borrowing and lending.

Martha has reported extensively on consumer banking and credit. She has written for numerous publications about topics including the foreclosure crisis, predatory lending, credit scoring, the CARD Act and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Her coverage of the credit card industry for Time and Money included overseeing Money’s Best Credit Cards rankings.
