Officials say 'very large gas leak' in Greenville now resolved

In a Facebook post around 8:10 p.m., dispatch said the leak was near E Union Street and S Clay Street on the south side of Greenville.

GREENVILLE, Michigan — Officials say most people can return to their homes after a "very large" gas leak in Greenville.

In a Facebook post around 8:10 p.m., dispatch said there were units blocking the area off and asked residents within a three-block radius of the area to evacuate.

Dispatch posted an update around 10:30 p.m. that everyone may return to their homes. But in a separate Facebook post around the same time, Greenville Public Safety posted residents in the effected area of Union Street were still not allowed to return home.

Darren Jones, Deputy Director of the Greenville Fire Department, said it started around 7:45 p.m. when some residents doing yard work thought they hit a tree root, but then realized it was a gas line and immediately called 911.

This was located near E Union Street and S Clay Street on the south side of Greenville.

Dispatch said it's important to use caution when starting vehicles and using any electronics, and watch out for sparks or fire.

Residents were told the gas leak was resolved and that they could return home around 10:30 p.m.
