One of these things is not like the other. One of these things do not belong.
Located on an unassuming block on the south side of Nelson street between Howe and Granville sits arguably one of Vancouver's best traditional sushi restaurants on the same block as a two dollar pizza place, a dive bar and fast food poutine.
From the outside Sushi Jin looks like just another standard sushi restaurant but on the the inside be prepared to experience some of the top quality slices of fish in Vancouver and bring your wallet as this place is priced accordingly.
The cheapest Omakase set is a 14 piece set for 85 dollar per person.
My wife and I opted for the second most expensive omakase set at 135 dollar per person omakase set c and had a mind blowing experience.
The omakase set c contains nigiri from the premium selections of the menu as well as two entrees, miso soup and dessert.
In my view this is a special occasion type of place where high end sushi lovers will really appreciate the fish and the skill of the sushi chef.
Those that like fusion saucy type rolls, and don't get me wrong there is a time and a place for good cheap mid grade sushi, should definitely look elsewhere.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Terese C.El Paso, United States2841071012 Jan 2020
We walked inside, all the tables were full with Japanese people. This was a great sign for us as it meant the food was authentic ! We just returned from a 2 week trip from Japan. The woman behind the counter said it would be 10 minutes as one table was just paying their bill. We were find with a 10 minute wait. She then handed us a menu and rudely stated, "We do not have noodles and no sushi." We felt we were not wanted at the restaurant because we are Caucasian. We realize in the sushi (California rolls) served in the US is not traditional sushi in Japan. For her to assume (and rudely state) we wanted noodles and sushi, turned us off. We thanked her and walked out of the restaurant.

This place is quite small but the quality of food is great. Soy sauce has interesting flavour, a bit citrusy and very refreshing. Must try restaurant for special date. Nice presentation with all edible flowers. I paid $160 for two people with sake.

This place probably is my favorite place for Suchi.
I like the atmosphere and the presentation of plates.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Crystal M W.Portland, United States6569381 Jan 2019
So delicious I even got my mother who doesn't do sushi to eat a few things. Everything so fresh and delicate. The Tamago was the best thing I've ever put in my mouth. Tempura shrimp like a tasty crispy cloud. High quality and skill shows in every dish. Kudos to the chef!

Dining at Sushi Jin was the highlight of my Vancouver mini-adventure last weekend. My husband and I walked in late last Friday night and were pleasantly surprised that the restaurant was already starting to get quiet for the night. We started out with some green tea and miso soup- both were great! We kicked off our sushi experience with some uni, which was delicious and fresh. Then, we had the a small salmon nigiri sampler (I believe it was three different kinds of salmon, if I'm not mistaken) All three were fantastic and incredibly fresh. At this point we were the only people in the restaurant, so the chef talked my husband and I through each piece of the Sushi Moriawase (8 piece nigiri) dish; the fish itself was incredible but it was also such a treat to learn about each piece! It was so much fun to see how intensely passionate about sushi- his eyes lit up as he talked about how he prepared each piece. When we finished the sampler we were still jonesing for more sushi, and he gave us each a piece of geoduck nigiri. It was fantastic- he dressed it with a little black salt, citron, and maybe one other ingredient (but I'm starting to get a little fuzzy a week later.) He also let us each try a small piece of otoro sashimi, which was INCREDIBLE and such a delicious treat. We wrapped up the sushi portion of our evening with a piece of Luxury Gunkan each, which lived up to it's name (it was SO decadent!) We were pretty full at this point, but our waitress offered to bring us a small dessert on the house so we decided to share one. She brought us out a perfectly sized (maybe 2-3 bites) piece of chocolate cake with a dollop of sour creme and a hint of maple-- it was a fantastic way to end the meal.
Everything about our meal at Sushi Jin was absolutely top notch - I can't wait to come back and will certainly recommend this restaurant to friends who are visiting Vancouver.Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - Rita H.Central, Vancouver, Canada3306330 Mar 2019Updated review
I went again today at 5:20 pm, just 20 minutes after the opening. The waitress put me on the wait list and told me the wait is roughly one hour and she will call me when a table is available. After waiting for one hour, I decided to call them again. However the waitress told me there wouldn't be any table available until 8pm, and asked me to wait another 1.5 hour!! I don't understand why she couldn't have told me that sooner instead of making me wait for 1 hour. I'm really disappointed with the service as I've wasted 1 hour.
I've never been treated like this in other restaurants before.
For whenever want to visit this restaurant, I strongly suggest you make reservations beforehand to avoid wasting time like me. Even if you are on the wait list, don't trust the wait time they tell you.Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 023 Feb 2019Previous reviewWe ordered assorted sashimi, all the sashimi tasted really fresh. The uni was great, it doesn't have any strong fishy taste. The food was worth the money.
I'll definitely come back to get the uni again. - Davey F.Seattle, United States34410518 Apr 2019
I'm so impressed. Wonderful service, delicious food, classy jazz in the background. We lingered and didn't want to leave. This place is a gem!

Excellent quality sushi. Have been here three times now trying omakase B, C,and D. D definitely has the wow factor and well worth the $150 price tag. Probably the best omakase in Vancouver.
Service still bothers me a little. On my first visit, the Host/waitress called us 3 times to make sure we arrive on time. We were 3 minutes "late" the first time and she had called me already (I was outside the door).
On my most recent visit we were 10 min early and they weren't ready for us. No problem as we were early. She gave us the menu and asked us if we were ready to order while we stood in the doorway. That felt really awkward. We're spending $300+ for two people, did you really need to take our order at the door?! We felt very rushed. We asked if we could order when we sat down. She smiled.
There's NO breathing room inbetween pieces. One piece after another after another. Literally as soon as you put it in your month, the next one is behind you lol. We were out the door in 45 minute (omakase B tonight). The vinegar on the shari was a bit overwhelming tonight though so not quite the same consistency as last two times. Some people may not like the red vinegar shari at all.
They really need to slow down the service before it takes a nose dive. I hate to say it but I had a much more enjoyable dining experience at Tetsu - also very high quality sushi but they don't rush you out the door! They brought the bill over WITH the dessert. Sigh.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Brandie D.Markham, Canada0742529 Oct 2019
The best sushi but it is $$$$ in dollars. Super Small, always full, great turnover the best fish, sushi, caviar, authentic I've ever had. But, 1 Chirashi for 1 is $60. It is amazing though, but don't be surprised at cost.
