Budget rent a car stranded us at SFO. Tired and hungry after touching down after midnite, I was in no mood to talk to a machine pleading them to call us back. After waiting for an hour, we gave up and took a cab to the hotel.
I remembered yelpers talking about City rent a car, so I gave them a call in the morning. One Big Star for an actual person picking up the phone. Another Big star for their very fair prices. Budget had us in a cheap compact for 75.00 a day. City put us in a Toyota Corolla for 35 bucks a day! What a deal.
Another Big Star for their service. They came and picked us up exactly as promised. We did the paperwork at City and were out of there in 10 mins with a 2008 Corolla, cleaned and full of gas.
We couldn't be any happier with City. Great people that care and offer excellent service. They even have a very convenient drop off site near SFO which deserves another Big Star.
Thanks City!Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Jen L.San Francisco, CA1945May 19, 2013
I wanted to like this place, I really did.
But they didn't deliver on the customer service for us.
I'm usually a zipcar person, but the 180 mile cap/day was a bit bothersome for a day trip to Sacramento, so I went on yelp and found this place.
I have to admit I did go back and forth on this place, I received quotes from several car rental places in sf and asked every rep I spoke with the final price I would walk out paying (insurance, fees, the whole thing).
The rep from City Rent-a-car started a quote for $65- including the insurance and everything. I let them know I might return the car later than 9 pm, and they said I could drop it off at a parking lot for an additional 10 dollars, bringing my total to $75. (figured it was still better than the 110 for the zipcar)
This is where she gets me, she asked if I was over 18, I answered yes, and then that was it. Confirmed with her at least 3 times, and she said the final price would be the $75.
So the day of the trip comes around, we go and pick up the car and she realizes we're under 25 and slams a $15/driver fee on us. I never rented a car outside of Zipcar before, so I was a bit surprised. Plus it was my friend and I, so bam, an additional $30 bucks out of nowhere, NOT in the quoted price. She didn't ask me if I was under 25... how was I suppose to know about this $15 dollar fee?? Her manager did assure me this was standard among car rentals, but again, how was I suppose to know?
I decided then to save 15 bucks and just let my friend be the primary driver, but since my credit card was on file, I "had" to pay and be the primary driver. I thought that was ridiculous, so after all that, to avoid rewriting and filling out the forms again and putting his credit card on file, he waived the fee for one of us.
On the bright side, the car was nice and the parking lot drop off was a breeze.
Drove in, the man behind the desk walked around the car, did his check, handed back the keys and even got a nice drive back home. At least the drop off was nice.
At the end of the day, I paid $90 + $30 for gas = $120 total. I think it would've been a 10 buck difference
I spent time getting quotes for a reason, and I didn't like the way they snuck the fee in, I understand that fee is standard, but I would have appreciated it if I knew about it. Plus, the rep seemed very irritated with us...she might have had a bad day, but again, unlike the other yelpers, I didn't get the customer service part.
Really wanted to like this place, but couldn't.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0Business owner information

Seriously, nobody was out to sneak anything in. The women who helped you was a new hire in training. We had to let her go for many reasons. Nevertheless, it's our fault for her misrepresentation. Call us and we will honor the original quoted price and give you a credit. Please note that you have to be at least 21 to rent from us, not 18. So sorry we failed you.

Look no further...ex out the tabs of those other rental car companies on your browser and make a reservation with City Rent-A-Car! I can really tell the staff here goes the extra mile for their customers evident in the added perk of free pick-up (hopefully you'll get Victor as your driver, he'll have you in stitches from your place to the office).
Very friendly staff, I dealt with Brandon at the front desk and he was a super nice guy, he even gave me and my friends a couple good tips about the city.
It was a seamless rental from beginning to end. Trust me, don't rent a car from anywhere else, City Rent-A-Car has the most competitive rates you'll find in the city and service that goes above & beyond! If I ever need a to rent a car in San Fran again, I'll undoubtedly return to City Rent-A-Car!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jeremy W.Irving, TX579Nov 20, 2014

I am happy that I came across City Rent-A-Car via yelp. My family was visiting from LA and I wanted to rent a car to do a day trip outside of the city since I wasn't sure my little jetta could take a long drive. I decided to give this place a try.
They were very busy in the morning when I went to pick up the car at 9 am on Monday. I rented an economy car but because the tire pressure was low, they upgraded me. That was excellent customer service. Plus when I dropped it off on Wednesday before 9 (apparently 9am is the busiest time of the day), it was very easy and I just hopped on the California Cable Car to get to work.
All in all a great experience and I will def go back and possibly rent a mini or fiat for road trips. By the way, the prices are very good in comparison to the larger car rental places.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Joshua C.Dallas, TX14259148May 18, 2016
These guys were great. They were willing to make me a deal on a 15 passenger van, which was already the cheapest you can find in SF by far. We used it to take a group out to Muir Woods without all the cost of a tour operator, and it worked out great. It was hard enough to find van rentals in SF without having to pick up out at the airport or spend an arm and a leg, and the cheap price and being located in Nob Hill made pickup from our hotel super easy. The van was late-model and clean, and they had a lot of other nice-looking cars. We even considered coming back and renting a convertible to drive the 101, but we ran out of time. The pickup and dropoff processes were easy and quick, and the experience overall was way better than you get with one of the big rental companies. What more can you ask for?

I'd priced out options with the major rental car companies in the city first, and then on a whim tried City Rent-A-Car. Their estimate was 40% lower! The service was really friendly and when I picked up the car, they let me use their computer to pay my Golden Gate Bridge toll ahead of time.
The after-after-hours drop off is easy too. It's an extra $10, but let me drop off at a garage in the Tenderloin, and then the garage gave me a ride to my apartment in the TL.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Joe P.Atlantic Beach, FL151611Aug 1, 2010
We visited central CA for 11 days in mid July and researched several car rental options. To rent a car from the airport for the entire time was going to be over $1000 and every advice column I read said to skip having a car in San Francisco. The public transit is great and parking is a bear. So we did.
It turned out fantastic, and on day 5 I rented a Honda Accord from City Rent A Car. I'd actually forgotten to make car arrangements and realized Saturday afternoon that I needed to reserve a car. None of the Enterprise offices even had a car available but when I called City they were able to take a reservation for the next morning.
The car was in excellent condition with less than 5000 miles on it. I took the bus to their office on a Sunday morning and picked the car up in about 15 minutes. We had the car until we returned it to the airport at 9pm on the 7th day, and my total charge with "City" was $416 - including a $30 airport drop-off fee, taxes, etc.
City Rent A Car was great. I would definitely recommend them and will rent from them again if in SFO. Thanks!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Catherine W.Fullerton, CA107183169May 25, 2010
Wanted to rent a car just for a day to Nap for our weekend get away, and this' the only place I can find that's close to Union Square, provides complimentary pickup and late drop offs.
The entire process was easy and pleasent. Made a reservation over the phone, called 30min prior for a free pickup in-front of our hotel. We've rented a compact car(Ford Focus) for $35.99+tax, the car was well kept and clean, staff were friendly and efficient. Best of all, we can return the car to the Holiday Inn couple blocks down from the City Rent A Car office by 930pm, and not worry about paying for over night parking.
Tips:
*mention yelp and you'll get 10% discount.
*During winter time or off season, you'll be able to get a much lower rate.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0
