Humane Society of Western Montana

We haven't adopted our dog yet (very soon though) but I wanted to take a moment to share our pre-adoption experience as I think it could help other folks out.

Firstly, this is a top notch facility. Very nice inside and out. I've seen pet hotels and boarding facilities that are nowhere near as comfortable as this is and don't even begin to offer the amenities that they do! It's clear to me that the staff takes great care of it and does the best they can with the donations received and budgeting allowed.

All of the staff that we have encountered over 4 visits in the past week have been great! They are all very well informed, knowledgeable, friendly and most importantly it is obvious that their number one priority is caring for the animals AND finding each one of them the right home. Matching the animals with a new family is all based on the prospective families questionnaire, family member & current dog interaction on site with the new animal as observed by trained staff members as well as the info gathered by staff members, the veterinarian, previous owner when possible and a professional dog/cat behavioralist! They are very thorough, which means once a dog or cat leaves their care, it truly has it's forever home and never has too return. They aren't just handing out animals to whoever walks in, they want to be sure that they will be well cared for and loved.

Kohl was extremely helpful in helping us decide on the right dog for us and was very professional & knowledgeable, especially when it came time to introduce our son & current dogs to him. Jean is one of the behavioralists and trainers who spent one on one time with us as well each visit and again, like Kohl, was very informative, detailed and shared a lot of her knowledge from her own past experiences with similar dogs. Sarah was another staff member that assisted us and like Jean and Kohl, made us feel very comfortable and welcome!

If you are considering getting a new pet I would give these guys a chance in helping you find the perfect match! There are so many dogs and cats in places like this that are just waiting to make your family complete if you give them the chance :)

I just had two very different experiences picking dogs up who were in the care of others; hands down these guys love and care for animals and helped us with a difficult situation when they didn't have to.

These guys are truly dedicated and do a great job. I got a beautiful husky mix a few weeks ago and things are going well. If you want a dog or cat, please consider these guys. They are truly passionate about caring for animals.

I haven't got a pet from here. They didn't have any small dog's.
They have big dogs and few cats but AniMeal has more cats.

We scheduled a private puppy lesson with Tiff Shao for our newest furry member of our family and were totally blown away. Tiff was super knowledgable and really met us where we were at with working from home and needing effective tools to train our new pup. Tiff created a very safe environment with covid precautions. We will definitely use her and her expertise in the future. Cannot recommend the Humane Societys training and education options enough!

I adore this place and what they do. I adopted my sweet 2 year old cat from there. The staff was informative, super nice and friendly, patient with my kids and got me going with whatever I needed to right away. My cat has been an amazing addition to our family and I feel like it was meant to be! Thank you!

The HSWM is A+++++. The staff are friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. They work really hard to find good matches between owner and pets. The shelter is clean and smells good, it is definitely not a sad place, it's a place filled with hope. The setting on the river is gorgeous and tranquil, every dog gets outside time and all the pets get personal enrichment. You can checkout social media and the website to find available pets. They offer free classes to the community and are often featured on the news. Their fundraisers and events are always fun and well organized. The only thing is: Be warned: when you visit you'll find it hard to leave without several furry friends! I just love this place and the staff, what a Godsend for these pets and the community. HSWM definitely sets the bar high.

Wow. They have an absolutely gorgeous building and everything was just so clean when we walked in. Much better than the dreadful conditions I'm used to seeing in the Helena Humane Society. Everything is clearly laid out on a sheet so that you have all the information you need while you are looking around. There are a ton of staff and volunteers waiting to help you. If you are looking for a place to volunteer or are looking for a new furry friend, I'd definitely look here!

I've gotten two great cats from the HSWM. The staff is awesome and they are really quite good at matching you up with a pet that fits your own personality and lifestyle, and fits in with your other pets. Their new facility is so nice, it's worth a trip there to see - the pets are the main reason to go, of course!
