Maybe its because we love sitting in private booths, but I keep finding myself coming back. Make sure to check out the specials when you walk in as you'll probablt forget about it once you've tucked yourself away in your booth. It's great place to hang out or catch up with friends and family.

Sashimi was good and waitresses were nice but the service was very slow. Also, everything other than the nigiri wasn't so good. We even had to return some food.
Save your money and go elsewhere because there are lots of sushi joints in Vancouver that are fresh and much more reasonably prices.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Fookcy L.West Side, Vancouver, Canada381Jul 3, 2017

One of the best Japanese restaurants in Vancouver! Authentic Japanese food made in the traditional way by their Japanese chef. Great service. The booths are great. Best tempura I've had in a long time. Everything we tried was delicious. Sushi, yakisoba, sashimi, tuna tataki...
Will be back.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Candace N.Coquitlam, Canada31813Jul 29, 2016

I would give this place a 5 star if the plates were bigger or a reduce in their pricing.
This place being located on East Hastings is already not exactly that attractive. But we went to try it anyways because a few friends told us this place is pretty good.
The appearance of this place on the outside I have to say is unattractive. It looks like they can use some renos to attract more people to come in. But once you are in its like a traditional japanese place with booths where you need to take off your shoes. When we walked in we notice there was only one customer at the bar who looked like their usual and no other customer. We're talking about 7pm on a sunday night. Throughout the whole time we were there, no one else came in. No phone call for take out either. We didn't understand how this place can survive with fresh ingredients and all.
We ordered salmon sashimi, oyster teriyaki, tuna tataki, yakiudon, tofu, chicken karaage, chop scallop roll and dynamite roll. This was barely enough for 4 people. We're not big eater either though. But our bill came up to be almost 100.00. Which seems a lot for a place on East Hastings but I have to say the food was really good. Like it was fresh and hot. Just that I would pay that price for food if this place was located in Downtown.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Devin H.Pasadena, CA23Oct 1, 2017
authentic sushi and Japanese food, no gimmicks, just down-to-earth quality food
Great ambience with tatami rooms-
The exterior decor is terrible and dated, but that is not how good food should be judged. It's a gem for those who have been to Japan and understand what authentic Japanese food should taste like-Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Dion D.Vancouver, Canada1563Sep 14, 2016
Amazing quality and preparation... you have to try this place!
Doesn't look that great from the street, but has everything you need inside. The chef's are amazing and they make the perfect thin rice sushi rolls with plenty of the good stuff (fish, etc) inside.
The sashimi was one of the freshest and tastiest you'll find in the city!!!
(UPDATE FALL 2016)
The tuna sashimi I received wasn't that fresh (smelled a bit off), but they did credit me back the cost for a future purchase.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Kevin B.Vancouver, Canada7429Jun 16, 2018
Koko has been around since 1982 and we finally got a chance to visit! Food is awesome, dynamite roll was one of the best I ever had with real shrimp. The place need a bit of a face lift though, it's dated. Prices aren't cheap either but it's quality.

Koko's has been here for as long as I can remember - and there's good reason for it's longevity..
Back in the day, the only place you could really get decent affordable Japanese food was Powell Street's Aki or the Japanese Deli (aka "Disco Sushi") and Koko..
Flash forward twenty five years and sushi's fairly ubiquitous - and while Disco Sushi is long gone and Aki's moved uptown, Koko's retains it's humble roots in it's unassuming Hastings location, next door to an A+W... and when it comes to value, quality and taste - it's easy to see why this family run restaurant will likely be around for another 25 years.
Dean W.'s on the money about the quality of their private stock wild salmon sashimi.. I'd also recommend the house special sushi platter.
With regard to Alina N.'s comments.
I've yet to encounter rude service at Koko's (even with a hyperactive child in tow, or in a large drunken group overstaying our welcome) and while it may be a little on the dingy side I've never found the place to be unclean. I suspect like most people, I won't use a chopstick that's fallen on the floor in ANY restaurant, whether the place looks clean or not.
Koko's is a great place to go with a group. They've got lots of izakaya / tapas fare perfect for sharing and picking at.. I'm a big fan of their seafood motoyaki and house-special "Kamikaze" chicken (basically boneless strips of chicken cooked in Frank's Red Hot - but goes great with beer and sushi). Prices for booze are fairly reasonable for the standard fare of hot/cold sake and giant Kirin by the bottle. Weekends can get pretty busy during dinner prime-time, so I'd advise calling ahead and try and snag one of their spacious tatami rooms (there are about nine of them - and I *think* a few of them can be combined to be double-length).
Bonus for the gents, Koko's also has the distinction of best view from the urinal ever. Unload a few of those giant beers with a panoramic view of the VanTerm cranes and North Shore Mountains.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 5Oh no 0
