I've lost track of how many times I've eaten here in the past four months, but I think it's fair to say that I'm pretty much a regular at this point. I typically order the three item dinner bento, and have only ordered the tekka donburi once on an impulse. I do this because for my current budget, the 3 item bento is the best deal and I typically end up taking home some food for a future lunch or dinner.
That said, Minami Sushi is a very small and unobtrusive place. The service is always good, and the only time I've ever had an issue is when it was a packed restaurant and there was only one waitress scheduled. (Not her fault, that was really a management issue.) The staff always greets you when you enter through the door, and you have the option of sitting down at a table or at the sushi bar.
Upon sitting down, the waitresses will always bring you a menu and a bowl of free edamame (note: it is only one bowl of free edamame per party, so a group of four will receive only one bowl of edmame just like a group of two). In addition to water, you can ask for hot tea free of charge and watch the sports channel on a large television screening towards the back of the restaurant while you decide on what to eat. The women's restroom is always clean and they even have a Japanese toilet installed. I haven't used the Japanese toilet to its full functional capacities besides flushing, but it's fun to see nonetheless.
The three item bento always comes with miso soup and salad with Japanese mayonnaise-based sauce that has sesame seeds in it. I haven't been disappointed by the miso soup or salad, and while I could tell them to 'ease off' on the dressing, I don't mind at all because I'm a big salad dressing fan.
Of the three item bento items, I've ordered: saba shioyaki; salmon teriyaki and shioyaki; californai roll; tonkatsu; tempura; and gyoza. I'm not a big traditionalist about how food 'should' taste since this is San Lorenzo and not Tokyo, so I really don't have any qualms about how the food tastes. In fact, I like it quite a bit and have yet to be disappointed with what I've ordered.
When you ask for a to-go box, the waitresses will give you what you need, and you'll be responsible for packing up your food.
This is a very low-key place that attracts a lot of regulars from around the area. It's not fancy or topnotch, and that's how I like it - down to earth and a place I can always count on to go to whenever I want to relax after work, treat myself to Japanese food, or be alone contentedly.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Ashley M.Oakland, CA311296Sep 11, 2023
Good food and quiet restaurant where you can actually have a decent conversation. I would suggest the sesame chicken.
The only item I would stay away from is the gyoza because they are fried hard, but some might like it that way.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jun 5, 2024
Minami is the sweetest owner of any restaurant. We have been eating here for years . She's the best . We have known one of her waitresses for 20 years love she's still here . The sushi is delicious and well made fresh and just amazing . Never been disappointed coming here . My husband even plastered the sushi chefs house so we know everyone here

Love this place for bento, way to much food shared a bento with my mom, and added seaweed salad, still to much for 2 people they also gave us free gyoza, comes with miso salad and edamame. Can't eat meat now but the ghalbi ribs are some of the best I've had in the bay very moist! Great service, fast and very friendly A++

I always end up getting the bento box, and they aren't stingy with the food I can never finish, edamame, miso soup, salad and then 3 items with rice, it is a lot! I love the kal bi ribs, sesame chicken and tempura! Gotta try it!

My go to sushi restaurant. My mom took me here for the first time over 10 years ago and I keep coming back and even convince people to come here too. And everyone I take LOVES it here.
Their food is so fresh, so delicious and affordable. I tend to go for the 3 item bento box because I can get sashimi and tempura with whatever 3rd item I want or am in the mood for. Their salad is the best salad I've had. Their dressing is just so yummy!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Michelle L.San Lorenzo, CA08614Jan 13, 2024
The best sushi in the area! Service is always on point. The Raider Roll is pretty good!

Chicken katsu is actually the best I've ever had. Super light coating and the chicken is succulent. Plus, our waiter was a total sweetheart. Only downside is a little expensive.

Went out here an hour before closing because we couldnt decide what to eat--& my partner and I were pleased to have such an easy, quick, filling meal here! The staff were supper friendly and quick to attend to us, even with an almost full house. The food came by quickly and the food was what you'd expect from any japanese restaurant.
The portion sizes are huge and they were kind enough to offer us gyoza, on the house :,)Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Samikat W.San Leandro, CA172Jan 29, 2024
Have enjoyed Teriyaki Chicken & Tempura Bento box here. You get plenty of good food including edamame, soup and salad. Staff is personable and answers any questions and service is good. What more can you ask for - we'll be back! Restaurant is clean and decorated nicely and there's plenty of free parking in the lot.

Good value here.
We each ordered the 3 item bento box; comprising salmon teri, pork cutlet and tempura. Comes with a big scoop of rice. They start you out with a nice mini salad bowl and some miso soup.
$30 with tax and tip times two.
Each was better than expected.
Tip: the place is located behind the Mc Donalds , next to Loards Ice cream parlor.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
