Q:
Do you only rescue small dogs? I read a review that mentioned it. And the pics show mostly smaller dogs. I received a letter requesting a donation that I am willing to give. I just want to know the facts Thank you
A:
We save dogs of all sizes! Check out our adoption page we have Poe, Heaps, and Chips! We have more smaller dogs because more of them are abandoned, and for large dogs to come to Muttville they have to be able to live cage free from dogs of all… more

My 15.6 year old Shiba Inu is blind, deaf, and arthritic but loves to eat That seems the litmus test for putting him down. He is partially incontinent. As an 83 year old it is harder and harder to care for him. Can you give hospice to him? Cost?

Hi Leona, We encourage you to discuss the best course of care for your beloved pet with your veterinarian. Quality of life is determined by many factors, and eating is just one of them. Hope this helps, thank… more

Great place to give your extra or not used dog items. They work 100% off donations. We recently donated all of our two dogs (Rocky and Maddox) toys, beds, dog meds, and other senior dog related items after we laid both boys to rest on 2/4/24. Glad this stuff can help other senior dogs like it did with our Rocky and Maddox

I decided to donate to this wonderful organization when I witnessed a beautiful senior dog get hit on a highway on vacation in Crete. I was devastated and so sad. I decided to try and turn a negative into a positive by finding a senior dog rescue to donate to. After extensive research, I chose Muttville because I believe in their mission and they are a highly-rated and wonderful organization! Donate to them and their beautiful senior dogs!

Great organization helping senior pups. Could be a bit more friendly and accommodating to people who would like to volunteer. I signed up to do cuddle club, adoptions events and to take shifts during the week. I was declined for all of these..as not needed

Before we adopted our fur baby, we were looking at a lot of different dogs and visited with many rescues and their events. At one point, we visited a few times with Muttville, and I actually put in an application on two of their pups. Unfortunately we were not selected. However I had positive experiences with this particular rescue as opposed to other rescues where sometimes I felt like they "reserve" certain dogs for their friends and families. Or that they have this very restrictive approach and attitude. This was all pre-Covid so maybe it's different now. Pre-Covid, I was able to go into this facility and pet the dogs, asked questions, and just hung out. Staff were friendly and very focused on helping the senior dogs to get their forever home.

2 of my dogs were recently brought to Muttville in SF with out my consent, My ex wife could no longer care for them, which is totally understandable give her situation, I just wish she would of communicated that to me but thats neither here or there, my issue is with muttville, I later found out from my Son where they were at, so I called muttville 2 days straight and left messages with no response back till this day, I also spoke with a Linda, I explained my situation and said she would relay the message to the intake unit, never heard back from anyone, All I wanted to do see them one last time before they were given up for adoption, those dogs were very dear to me, we had them since they were puppys, I feel like my calls were getting ignored purposely, I think its very selfish and unprofessional of them to do this, I've been crying about this the past 2 days, All I wanted to do is say goodbye, If it was in my power to do so, I would of kept them with me but I wasn't in a good situation to have them, All I wanted was one more hug, one more kiss and look them in the eyes and say I love you Sonnie and nena, i'm afraid they are gone now, I no longer see them on the website, SHAME ON YOU MUTTVILLE

We are so sorry you were disappointed by Muttville. We understand how difficult it is to say goodbye to a dog who has been so important to you, and we know it’s a painful situation no matter how it happens.
We apologize if our response time seemed slow—we are a small staff and are doing the best we can, but we hear you and are working to find solutions. Once a dog is signed into our care, they go almost immediately into a great foster home. Our fosters are dedicated to the dogs and to finding them loving forever homes, and we are almost never able to facilitate a meeting between a foster family and a former guardian. We hope you can take comfort in the fact that your dogs have known nothing but love and care since they arrived at Muttville. - lynne h.San Francisco, CA012Dec 24, 2023
We had an awful experience adopting from here; we learned a few days after the adoption that the dog was very seriously ill and needed to be rushed to the hospital from treatment she had there before the adoption. We got the coldest response from Muttville to an urgent request for help (to even get into a vet)--it was now our responsibility. I hadn't even asked for assistance with what was going to be a huge vet bill, just wanted help getting the medical treatment the dog needed. I've adopted several rescue dogs over the years, and I can say with certainty that Family Dog and Rocketdog would never have reacted in the cold and butt covering way Muttville did. I'd strongly recommend adopting from one of them instead.

We are so sorry that you were not satisfied with your interaction with Muttville, and we especially regret any suffering your dog had to endure.
As you know from our subsequent conversations and concurrence by your vet, the treatment your dog received here was standard practice, and the drug reaction she experienced is highly unusual. We performed all the tests we could that would help predict adverse effects, and they did not point to any foreseeable risks.
We regret that our vet team's response sounded cold, and we will work to be clearer and more compassionate. We are, however, unable to provide emergency service or any treatment after guardianship has transferred to an adopter. Doing so can imperil our veterinary licensing.
Your visit to an emergency clinic was exactly the right step to take, and your dog was lucky to have you respond so quickly and well. - Eden G.San Francisco, CA2796135May 31, 2021
This review is long overdue! I started fostering at Muttville several months after I lost my first fur baby (not a Muttville alum) to kidney failure; she was a senior when she crossed the rainbow bridge. I figured that by working with senior dogs, it would help with the healing because I wanted to do it to honor her life. I never intended to adopt another dog for a while, but I instantly fell in love with my first foster mutt, Patty Cakes.
Long story short, I ended up adopting my first and only foster dog. Patty Cakes was found as a stray, but was luckily fairly healthy; all she needed was a few dental extractions and cleaning. Muttville supported me throughout every stage from fostering, the adoption process, and making sure she got a proper dental cleaning/extraction after I adopted her.
I do plan on fostering more mutts after I find a bigger place to live, and hopefully have the courage to not have every dog I foster be a "foster fail"
I would love to volunteer with Muttville, because it is a great company and dog shelter to support! Senior dogs need forever homes tooHelpful 1Thanks 1Love this 3Oh no 0 - Rebecca R.Oakland, CA61365Apr 25, 2022
My husband and I recently fostered and adopted a blind 8 y/o cattle dog named Dina through Muttville. A friend of ours has been a volunteer with them for years and that is how I know about them. Muttville is an amazing organization and saves many lives. They make it very easy to foster. They provide food, bed, toys and meds and what ever else your foster pooch needs. The staff is very helpful and responsive if you need help. We are so so grateful to have found Dina. I highly recommend working with them if you are thinking of adopting or volunteering!

I have not adopted a dog from Muttville, but have went through an interview with intentions to adopt.
The adoption of a dog named Gordon (a super cute and old silver chihuahua mix!) ended up being a better fit for another family, but the entire process was lovely. The staff, volunteers, and foster family have the best attitude and passion for finding senior dogs amazing homes. I was able to Zoom call with Gordon and his foster family. It was so sweet and I loved seeing Gordon.
I was so happy to hear that Gordon went to a very loving and thoughtful family. I think it was very essential that staff analyzed my current situation, and the other family, to make the best decision for Gordon. It showed that Muttville truly cares about the dogs they work with and will not place them in homes without thorough consideration.
Since Gordon stole my heart, I have not been interested in adopting another dog. But even so, staff and volunteers still mentioned how they would be more than happy to find another perfect fit for our pet family when the time comes.
The foster family of Gordon even reached out to see if I'd be interested in another dog they are fostering.
I love Muttville and fully support this organization!Helpful 1Thanks 1Love this 2Oh no 0 - Todd W.Berkeley, CA0143Oct 8, 2021
My wife and I had been considering getting a dog and looked at various pet adoption services. There are many fine, reputable agencies In the Bay Area and as we preferred a rescue dog as opposed to a dog breeder, we "shopped around". Our son recommended an adult/senior dog as they are often overlooked. People want puppies. That's when we found Muttville. Honestly, the staff at Muttville deserve much high praise and all the accolades one could deliver to them. They consistently checked in with us, helped us settle our new "pup" Polly into her forever home and are the nicest, kindest, most patient folks ever.
Bottom line, if you are thinking of adopting a dog, please consider going through Muttville. You will not be disappointed and your new four legged friend will be eternally grateful. Thank you Muttville!!Helpful 1Thanks 1Love this 2Oh no 0
