About the Business
Established in 2016. Emmy® Award-winning and Golden Globe® nominated writer, actress and comedian Monica Piper stars in this hilarious and heartfelt autobiographical ride of a Jew-"ish" woman's life. From her show business family in the Bronx, to a WASP wedding, to her first step on a comedy club stage and life as a single mom, Piper shares the milestones and moments that shaped her life with the same signature wit found in her writing on, "Roseanne", "Mad About You", and her Emmy Award winning work on "Rugrats". Reminiscent of Billy Crystal's 700 Sundays with a peppering of Neil Simon's Lost In Yonkers, Not That Jewish is 90 lightning fast minutes of funny, moving, intimate and inspirational theater. Now in performances at New World Stages.

This play was phenomenal
Normally I'm not the biggest fan of one woman (or man) shows. I find them to be a little tough to deal with, as the performer is usually over the top. Monica Piper was somehow different. Was she over the top? Yes at times, but the way character trait melded into her life story (what this play was all about) was somehow perfectly fitting. Her story growing up in the city with a comedian father idolizing the Yankees somehow struck a chord with me. I really don't want to give away any of the play, but by the end I felt like I had been along for the ride. And it was fun. The development of the characters is done superbly well, by the end you feel like you know all of her family members, friends and rivals personally. I truly didn't expect to get teary eyed during this performance, but she had us laughing through the tears.
This play is absolutely worth checking out if you get a chance.Helpful 15Thanks 0Love this 15Oh no 0 - Oct 18, 2016
Monica Piper is a magical in her one-woman autobiographical show starting from before her birth featuring a cast of friends and family members.
Monica, born May Lee Davis, takes us from her parents' courtship through her childhood, adulthood, career, motherhood and present day. The themes of Judaism are present but this is a show anyone can appreciate.
Full disclosure - I received these tickets for free (thanks, Yelp!) and our seats were awesome! (thanks, Ruggy!) but I would have paid to see this show and enjoyed it. Perhaps better suited for older people or Chosen people but all will find her take on life charming, touching, sweet and funny.Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 5Oh no 0 - Pamela R.New York, NY154276Nov 7, 2019
Can hardly wait for this show to come back to NYC so I can bring more friends. I already saw the show twice. I don't usually enjoy a one-woman/man play but Monika Piper is a very full cast. Funny, sweet, clever show.
Come back to NYC please soon, Monika!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Nov 1, 2016
Monica Piper is that comedian you didn't know you knew. I won't give it away, but if you grew up in the 90s you need to thank this woman for making your childhood awesome.
If you're older, you'll love the nostalgic peeks at growing up in the Bronx. Like a funnier, Jewish version of "A Bronx's Tale" except Robert De Niro was a Borscht Belt comedian and no one invited Chazz Palminteri to Seder because he was terrifying.
The show is infinitely relatable. It spans three generations and two coasts, with a meaningful stop in the Bible Belt. Monica Piper's delivery is surprisingly reminiscent of Robin Williams. They are contemporaries. Makes me wonder how much time they spent together.
As the title alludes to, you don't have to be Jewish to enjoy this show. But liking a schmear on your bagel doesn't hurt. In the end we're all just a little bit Jewish because we all have the same human heart.Helpful 8Thanks 0Love this 12Oh no 0 - Mark K.Venice, CA66Oct 24, 2016
What a great show. An amazing mixture of laughter, love, and self-honesty and real reflection all in one. Monica Piper is a blast describing her own life and the lives of her family in hilarious relief and with unending kindness and real compassionate perception.
I know it's a cliche to say "I laughed! I cried!". But I did, and so did many others around me. I went with three friends, two of whom are not Jewish, and they loved it just as much, finding much to identify with. Monica kept us laughing even through the dark parts.

You laugh through the tears! Monica Piper was phenomenal! This play was just the right mixture of: nostalgia for old NYC, family, hardships of life, joys of life, but all under the veil of laughter.
I found tickets for this on goldstar events and took my family not knowing exactly what this show would be like. My entire family was touched by this play and most of all impressed with the talent and comedic ability of this amazing performer.
You don't have to be Jewish at all to enjoy this play to its fullest. But of course being Jewish makes the entire production feel like you're getting a funny and comforting hug.
After the show go for some veriniki and vodka at the Russian Samovar a few blocks away and seal in a great evening.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Enid G.New York, NY01Oct 30, 2016

Not sure what show everyone else saw in these reviews but we just walked out half way through the show. Not engaging, not funny! Only show in my life I walked out on and we were not the only ones! We were waiting, and waiting for the humor and it never came. The audience was not laughing either so it was not just us!
