Q:
Does Salt & Straw offer vegan and/or dairy-free options?
A:
Si, I am not a vegan or lactose-intolerant. But the specialty ice creams are delicious. I really couldn't tell the difference.

Iconic high end ice cream spot with wild flavor options. Smells delicious from a block away, and doesn't disappoint when in hand. Love that they have plenty of good vegan options as well.

I feel like Salt & Straw has it all - the ambience and culture of a neighborhood shop with the options and presence of a larger chain.
One of the things that really sets S&S apart is their flavor variety. There are bizarre flavors (like Thanksgiving savory flavors in November) and more traditional flavors (like chocolate gooey brownie). Regardless of how unusual the flavors may be, every flavor is executed incredibly well. Not only do you feel like a kid in a candy store choosing your order, but you also feel like you're treating with ice cream that is really really tasty.
The other thing that keeps me coming back to S&S is the monthly flavors. Every month has a theme (like vegan, halloween, breakfast cereals, etc). It is so fun to try the new flavors!
Last but not least, they have vegan flavors! I am not a vegan, but these are some of the best vegan ice creams I've tried (I think they use coconut milk for many of them).
Covid Note: S&S is open for indoor eating, but you can also just take your ice cream outside since there is limited space inside. Also, they have samples.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Stephen W.San Francisco, CA0120618Sep 1, 2023
It's ice cream! How bad can it be?
Food: the ice cream tastes pretty good! It's good after eating some salty food.
Service: friendly! It's efficient too.
Ambiance: it has a certain look to it, it's very distinct. Simple, yet complex.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Mar 4, 2022
I used to go this salt and and straw monthly when they dropped a new flavor. It's the right place with friends/family or even yourself for a treat !
You can check online for their specials in your area or they usually have a sign outside this location for their monthly flavors.
Usually February has chocolate series, March (time writing this has vault series) October and November have Halloween (have bugs in one of their flavors) and Thanksgiving (cornbread, turkey).
This location does not have too much space to chill after getting ice cream but you are on Fillmore street and there are parks around the area you can head to afterwards. Staff is usually friendly and free taste is available if you show your vaccination card.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Nov 30, 2022
always reliable and delicious! it's dangerous living close to a salt n straw because I am here more often than I'd like to admit. I love trying the new monthly flavors but you can never go wrong with the classics. I've definitely been here over ten times and I've only had bad service/portion sizes once. otherwise, this is always my go to spot for dessert!

They have the best dairy free gluten ice cream! Yes ice cream actually instead of sorbet! They usually have a sorbet option as well, but my brother is gluten and dairy free and can actually have their mint chocolate chip ice cream. I have also gotten it without having dietary restrictions because it's so creamy with refreshing hints of mint, laced with dark chocolate chips.
They have seasonal flavors and I think change their flavors I believe once a month.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Mireya M.Richmond, CA02616Jul 9, 2023

Salt & Straw is some of my friend's favorite ice cream shop but I was never interested in paying a visit as I don't eat much dairy. It wasn't until I met my newfound besties, who are big ice cream, gelato, and sorbet fans that I promised myself I'd give it a try with them before I leave the Bay. Eating and experiencing the ice cream from Salt & Straw exceeded my expectations and I'm so happy they convinced me!
We met up in the evening to get our ice cream fix. It was my first time but being regulars, I followed their lead as we entered the small, simple, and spacious shop. I was overwhelmed by their unique menu but overjoyed to see that they offered vegan ice cream! For this month, their monthly flavors are all berry centered. I'm a huge berry fan so picking my flavor was an easy choice. I then saw they offered vegan mint and chip--my all-time favorite ice cream flavor and became indecisive. My friend recommended that I sample the flavors, which I'm so happy I did as they offer unlimited sampling--yum! Loving the samples, I ordered a Split Single Cup of Boysenberry Oatmilk Sherbet and Freckled Mint Chocolate Chip. Both flavors left me doing the happy dance! The boysenberry was refreshing with a subtle hint of boysenberry. The mint and chip were creamy and packed with plenty of chocolate slivers. It's wonderful they offer the option to split scoops which I recommend doing so. For a single scoop, I found the portion to be very generous as it's up to par with a double scoop at other ice cream shops.
There are two Salt & Straw locations in the city. This location is nestled in Pacific Heights surrounded by small shops, restaurants, and cafes. Parking is street only in the neighborhood. Service is friendly and efficient as you sample the flavors, choose your scoop size, pick out your ice cream flavors, pay, and enjoy! The inside of the shop has two small tables and chairs. We went outside to enjoy our ice cream on the bench since the tables were taken.
Just like my sweet besties Eric R. and Jennifer L. I'm now a huge Salt & Straw fan! I love that they offer both classic and monthly fresh, tasty, and high-quality ice cream and sherbet flavors. I'd recommend checking them out as all of their flavors are such unique combinations that are almost unheard of! I want to thank Jennifer L. for a wonderful summer treat for my first-time visit! I'm already looking forward to coming back to try their other vegan flavors and waffle cone!Helpful 90Thanks 0Love this 93Oh no 0 - 79328654Sep 29, 2021
Don't have access to the chain where I'm from, so had to try when I was in SF! Tried four different flavours basically, but not sure if they'll still exist by the time I write this review.
Olive Oil - It tasted like oil for sure. But it reminded me of cardboard. I definitely did not like it but people seem to like it. Maybe I'm uncultured. I really did try to finish it and enjoy it , but my body was not happy with it.
Bug Juice Sorbet - Don't be afraid from the bug aspect - it's VERY refreshing and basically tasted like fruit punch sorbet. Really good!
Coffee Bourbon - The coffee is strong but meshes well with the alcoholic taste, which has a very distinct, potent taste. It was really good, probably my favourite one.
Lavender - Very basic and tastes like any other lavender ice cream you get. Taste is very accurate to lavender flavours. Still good though, but nothing jaw-dropping.
The staff were nice and the selection of ice cream was very appealing. Seems to be street parking for here and lots of other shops around here too! No indoor seating it seems, so you have to take it outside. Seems to get crowded even late at night too. No samples, but I wish there was so I could have tasted the olive oil before spending money on it.
It's a little expensive, although typically I'm fine with it if I deem something worth it. This place was good, but the flavours I got personally were a little too "basic" or "simple" to make it worth the price, even if the ice cream is good quality. Maybe I should have went for the Pear and Blue Cheese one. Kind of blame myself for probably choosing the wrong flavours for myself. The olive oil was definitely unique, but I really couldn't finish that one... none of us could. I'm sorry!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Mar 19, 2023
I went and got the same ice cream order from S&S 3 days in a row bc it was that good. Obsessed with their cornflake marionberry and the coffee with chocolate covered almonds flavors and their waffle cones are unreal. There's always a line here so you know it's good. Staff are friendly and they offer samples.
