Most cars and SUVs will fit in a typical 10×20-foot car storage unit. The following storage rates are broken down by different types of storage solutions.  

Outdoor car storage. This is essentially an uncovered parking space with a few security measures in place, such as fencing around the facility’s perimeter. Your car will likely be parked on asphalt, concrete, or gravel and exposed to the elements. Consider buying a car cover to protect it from the sun, wind, rain, and snow.

Average cost: $30–100 per month

Covered car storage. While still outdoors, this option offers a carport-style awning, which provides partial protection from the elements. Your car will still be susceptible to outdoor temperature swings, which can be hard on your vehicle in extremely hot or cold climates.

Average cost: $60–175 per month

Communal indoor car storage. With this option, your car has its own reserved spot in a secured, shared garage. Some pricier storage facilities are climate-controlled and offer other amenities.

Average cost: $100–200 per month

Private indoor car storage. The priciest option, your car will have a dedicated garage or self-storage unit that houses only your vehicle. Single-unit storage spaces are typically the most secure, and oftentimes other amenities, such as climate control, might be available.

Amenities. Each storage facility may offer different amenities that can affect the price, including climate control, on-site support, valet parking, battery maintainers (also known as float chargers), and security features like gated entries, 24-hour monitoring, surveillance cameras, and alarms.  

Location. The location of the car storage facility can significantly affect its price. Self-storage facilities in more populated areas, like New York City, or in areas of high demand will be priced higher. Additionally, the location of the storage unit or parking space within the facility can also drive up the price. Units that are easier to access, like near entrance and exit points, will typically cost more than other storage units. 

Peak season. Long-term storage facilities may experience higher demand during the summer or winter season from people storing their cars to protect them from extreme weather, which can drive up the monthly price.      

Registration and insurance. Most storage facilities require your vehicle to be registered and insured in order to store it.

Administration Fee. Some storage facilities charge an administrative fee when you sign a lease to store your car. This is a one-time fee, usually $20–30.
