Honda has a well-deserved reputation for building reliable vehicles. But your Honda’s reliability depends largely on how well you maintain it. 

“Some Honda owners see the brand’s legendary reliability and assume they can drive it forever,” says Justin Cupler, former ASE-certified technician and shop manager. “But like any car, your Honda requires maintenance to keep it running for hundreds of thousands of miles.” 

This guide explains the brand’s basic car maintenance needs, what you can expect to pay, and ways to save money on Honda maintenance costs.  

If you drive your Honda an average of 15,000 miles per year, annual maintenance costs will run $258–692. That’s a big range, because costs vary widely depending on the year, make, model, and condition of your car.

All Honda Civics, Honda CR-Vs, Honda Accords, Honda Pilots, and other models have a built-in Maintenance Minder System, which alerts car owners when it’s time for service. A lighted wrench will appear on your dashboard when it’s time for an oil change, fluid level test, front and rear brake inspection, gearbox inspection, spark plug replacement, drive belt and timing belt checks, and more.

The most common routine maintenance needs and costs are as follows:

Oil change intervals vary by vehicle and how you drive. Check the Maintenance section of your owner’s manual for specifics. Generally, you’ll need an oil change every 3,000–10,000 miles, or at least once a year. Expect to pay between $35–75, including the engine oil, oil filter, and labor.

Using conventional petroleum-based motor oil will keep costs down, while synthetic oil is more expensive but tends to last longer. 

Expect to rotate tires every 6,000 miles, to ensure even wear and longer tread life. Expect to pay between $35-75 to rotate all four tires.  

Your Honda’s engine air filter keeps dirt and debris from getting into the engine. Over time, this filter can get clogged, resulting in a loss of performance and fuel economy. 

A new air filter and installation costs between $20–40 for most Honda models, a job that should be done every 30,000–45,000 miles.

Automatic transmissions require periodic fluid changes to keep components lubricated and clean. Typically required every 60,000–100,000 miles, expect to pay between $75–150 for fresh transmission fluid plus labor to replace it.

Heat and contaminants degrade brake fluid over time, preventing your front and rear brakes from performing as well as they should. A brake fluid change every 4–5 years will help keep you safe, and cost between $80–120, including fluid and labor. 

Coolant helps keep your engine operating at an optimal temperature, but coolant breaks down and becomes less effective over time. A coolant change every 30,000–60,000 miles can prevent problems, and should cost about $100–200.

The cabin air filter prevents dust, allergens, and particulates from coming into the cabin through the climate control system. This filter will eventually become clogged, reducing airflow and possibly creating unpleasant odors. A new filter every 15,000 should cost between $50–75 including parts and labor.
