Extended Reality Initiative (XRi) At Kent State

The Extended Reality Initiative (XRi) at Kent State is focused on developing immersive educational experiences in the realm of extended reality, artificial intelligence, and related technologies. The initiative has received funding from various entities including the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Jaffe Foundation, and the Martha Holden Jennings Foundation (MHJF). This has allowed for:

  • The design and study immersive 360 video experiences incorporating single and multi-perspective video, as well as holograms for virtual and mixed reality to facilitate teacher education of future elementary mathematics teachers.
  • Development of machine learning to harness AI’s capacity to assist teachers, parents and students for assessing written mathematics work.
  • Dissemination of resources and tools for teachers to use makerspace technology (3D printers and Cricut machines) to produce concrete manipulatives in their own classrooms – providing an economic alternative to overly priced materials at current commercial prices.

Materials from these funded projects and related initiatives are shared here as they become available.
