African Fertilizer and Agribusiness Partnership (AFAP) - Uganda country office with support from AGRA today held a farmer field day in Nauyo village, Nauyo Town council, Mbale city, Uganda with 74 farmers in attendance.
Major Highlights during the event included.
A). Proper Fertilizer Application:
▪︎Soil Testing: The need to do soil testing before applying fertilizernso as to determine its nutrient needs.
▪︎Correct Type of Fertilizer: The need to selecting the appropriate type of fertilizer based on soil test results and crop requirements (e.g., nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium).
▪︎Right Quantity: The need for applying the correct amount of fertilizer to avoid waste of fertilizer and prevent them from harming the crops and the environment.
▪︎Timing: Fertilizing at the right growth stage of the crop for maximum nutrient uptake.
▪︎Method of Application: The need to use the right method, such as broadcasting, banding, or foliar application, to ensure efficient nutrient use.
B). Appropriate Seed Rate in Relation to Crop Spacing:
▪︎Seed Rate Calculation: Determining the optimal amount of seed to plant per unit area, considering the specific crop and its growth habits.
▪︎Spacing Requirements: Ensuring the seeds are planted at the correct spacing to avoid overcrowding, which can lead to competition for nutrients, water, and light, or too much spacing, which can result in wasted space and reduced yields.
▪︎Planting Depth: Planting seeds at the correct depth for optimal germination and growth.
▪︎Thinning: If necessary, thinning seedlings to maintain the ideal plant population.
C). Demonstration on How to Use Protective Gear While Spraying:
▪︎Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Farmers were shown the types of PPE needed, such as gloves, masks, goggles, and long-sleeved clothing.
▪︎Correct Usage: Demonstration on the proper way to wear and use the protective gear to ensure maximum safety.
▪︎Safety Practices: Teaching best practices for handling and applying pesticides, including mixing, application, and disposal.
▪︎Post-Application Procedures: They were educated on what to do after spraying, such as washing hands and clothes, and safely storing or disposing of leftover chemicals and PPE.
These training elements help ensure farmers use inputs efficiently, safely, and sustainably to enhance productivity and protect their health and the environment.
We were glad to have Grainpulse Limited our partner taking part in the training. This is among the ongoing various farmer field day trainings we are conducting.
