Standard units incorporate both the condensing and evaporating systems in a single unit, which in residential and most industrial locations is impractical. The units are likely installed in basements with no way of rejecting the by product - cold air. As they must be able to reject the cold exhaust air to prevent recycling of the cold air and subsequent loss of capacity. The solution to this problem was to separate the condensing and evaporating units – much like the more modern split – type air conditioning units.
