"If I've worked for 5 days, why can't I access any of that money? We're trying to create a system that does that, and does it significantly better than the existing alternatives which are 10 times more expensive." Our cofounder and CEO Simon Ellis recently sat down for a conversation with Jay Lawrence on the Ambitious Minds Podcast. This excerpt perfectly captures why we exist. 80% of the world's workforce is deskless. That's 2.7 billion people. But only 1% of enterprise spending gets allocated to them 🤯 We're leveraging technology to make HR inclusive, and to give South Africa's frontline employees what they deserve – access to fair financial products 🩷 #HRtech #EarnedWageAccess #DigitalTransformation #JemHR

Last week, we released Part 1 of our guide to Earned Wage Access (EWA). Missed it? Here’s a quick recap: ▪️The current financial reality for the majority of South Africa’s workforce is bleak. 84% of employees are deeply worried about their finances, which affects their performance at work and leaves them vulnerable to predatory lenders ▪️We did a deep dive of what EWA is (controlled access to a small percentage of already-earned wages) and what it isn’t (a loan or cash advance that burdens employers and traps employees in a debt cycle) ▪️We outlined how it works and how simple it is for companies to implement it We also ran through the numerous benefits, for both employers and employees It’s time for Part 2. Here, we dive into the common misconceptions about Earned Wage Access. Why are some employers reluctant to implement it in their business? Is their caution justified?

We also go into detail about the factors to consider when you’re choosing an EWA provider to parter with. Get it all below 👇 https://lnkd.in/dQZEG3RK #EarnedWageAccess #EWA #HRtech #EmployeeBenefits

We love a celebration 🤩 Yesterday, the women of Jem hosted a few of our clients for a #WomensDay lunch at Gemelli in Joburg. It was an afternoon of joy, support and connection. In true Jem style, we kicked off the event with a check-in question: "What's the funniest excuse someone has ever given for not coming to work?" It was the perfect icebreaker and set the tone for a conversation that continued long after the scheduled 2pm stop. We bonded over good food, great mimosas, endless laughs and compelling stories. As the conversation meandered, there was a recurring theme – the joy the Jem platform brings our clients through simplifying their internal processes, and the dignity we bring to their employees. We went home with our hearts full 🩷 The clients that joined us included: ▪️ Goscor Group ▪️ Securitas Group ▪️ Clinix Health Group (Pty) Ltd ▪️ PRIME AFRICAN SECURITY ▪️ GHOST SQUAD SECURITY ▪️ Leroy Merlin ▪️ MASHOLD LIMITED ▪️ Colossal Aviation Services ▪️ Oryx Group Needless to say, it was a roaring success. We can't wait for the next one 🥂 PS: the Cape Town-based women of Jem got together at Tasha's Constantia for a pre-work breakfast. There weren't any mimosas involved, but quality time and conversation was enjoyed all the same. #InsideJem #HRtech #WomenInTech

In the course of talking to employers about the use cases for Earned Wage Access, I hear this response a lot: "People need to learn to budget better". It's a comment that irritates me. We're told that people should be grateful to have a job in South Africa, because so many don't. But a large proportion of people who are working full time do not earn a living wage. A Grade B security guard in Cape Town earns R6300 per month, full time, as stipulated by the security industry regulator PSiRA. A family of four needs a minimum of R8056 to attain a basic standard of living in South Africa. If their spouse does not contribute, the shortfall is 20%. What is a basic standard? Food - R3240 Transport - R 606 Housing - R1000 Utilities - R 600 Healthcare - R 160 (for a family of four 🤯) Household & hygiene - R 650 Education - R 200 Mobile - R 400 Recreation - R 400 Other (clothing etc) - R 800 Having read that, and knowing what your own monthly expenses are, do you think it's a lack of budgeting skill that causes people to be chronically short of cash? These estimates are taken from the Living Wage website. I encourage you to check it out. Link is in the comments. Jem HR #livingwage #paydayloans #loansharks #livingstandards #minimumwage

This Mandela Day, the Jem HR team had the privilege of supporting two incredible organisations, spreading a little bit of joy to children in need. Johannesburg - The Johannesburg Children’s Home Our team crafted delicious hot dogs and snack packs for 63 wonderful kids. We also purchased essential wish list items to support the home’s operations for a few weeks. Special thanks to Fiona, the fundraiser, for allowing us to assist. About the home: The Johannesburg Children’s Home provides a nurturing family environment, offering holistic care, developmental programs, and therapeutic support to help children and youth realise their full potential. Cape Town - Isibindi (Ysterplaat) In Cape Town, our team prepared snack packs for 31 children and bought wish list items to support the children's home (Echo House). Ysterplaat, a suburb with diverse demographics, faces challenges with high-risk and vulnerable children. About Echo House: Echo House in Ysterplaat, started in January 2018, provides safe spaces for vulnerable children. With nutritious meals, supervised homework sessions, and stimulating activities, the children find a sense of worth, love, and purpose. A big thanks to the Jem team for your energy, and an even bigger thanks to the amazing selfless humans who run these incredible children’s homes. #MandelaDay #PeopleMatter #JemHR
