  • Interruption! Interrupting someone during a conversation is more than just a breach of etiquette, it can be perceived as an act of aggression. According to Nancy Kline’s Time to Think methodology, interruptions disrupt the speaker’s train of thought and send a message that their ideas are less important. This can lead to feelings of frustration, disempowerment, and diminished self-esteem. Research in communication also suggests that frequent interruptions can be interpreted as dominance or control, which may damage relationships and make it difficult to have an open conversation. Creating a space where everyone can express themselves without fear of being cut off fosters respect, trust, and deeper connections. When we resist the urge to interrupt, we empower others to think more clearly, express themselves fully, and contribute meaningfully to the conversation. Unlocking the Power of Quality Questions for Quality Outcomes Most days we are faced with decision-making and problem-solving, and the questions we ask can either open up possibilities or shut them down. Understanding the right questions to ask is a powerful skill that can lead to insightful solutions and meaningful progress. Next time you find yourself or your team feeling stuck, try these 3 simple steps to come up with quality questions that will open up quality outcomes: Identify the Challenge: What is the issue or challenge we are facing? Clarify the Goal: What outcome or goal do we want to achieve? Formulate the Enabling Question: What is the question that best enables that outcome? When considering these questions, also be mindful of the time available, the people involved, and the information at hand. These elements are crucial in shaping questions that inspire clear thinking and effective action. • Transforming Interviews into a Calm, Collaborative, and Creative Experience Interviews are often seen as high-stakes, nerve-wracking events, where the interviewee feels immense pressure to perform. But what if interviews could instead be a space for creative collaboration and meaningful dialogue? Unfortunately, many candidates dread interviews, fearing they’ll freeze under pressure or fail to present their true potential. Sometimes, the stress can even lead to brain fog or anxiety, making it difficult to shine. To help create a more positive and productive experience for interviewees, here are 7 steps to foster a calm and creative thinking environment: 1. Create an Open Space If meeting in person, eliminate physical barriers between you and the candidate. If online, ensure your camera is on, turn off notifications, and focus on the interviewee by placing them in full-screen mode. 2. Start with Appreciation Begin the interview by genuinely thanking the candidate for their time and interest. This small gesture can ease nerves and set a positive tone. 3. Maintain Warmth Keep your demeanour and facial expressions warm and inviting throughout the interview. 4. Encourage Dialogue Before diving into questions, ask if the candidate has any concerns or questions. After each question, give them uninterrupted attention and ask if they have anything more to add. 5. Take Thoughtful Notes Focus fully on the candidate while they are speaking, and only take notes after they’ve finished their response. 6. Challenge Assumptions Gently question any untrue assumptions they may express to prevent limiting beliefs from taking hold. 7. End with Recognition Close the interview by appreciating a quality you noticed in the candidate, such as their composure or ability to articulate their thoughts clearly. By following these steps, you can help transform the interview process into a more creative, collaborative, and calm experience for all involved. The 3 S’s of Appreciation 🌟 Ever feel like just saying "thank you" or "great job" isn’t enough? Most of us crave genuine appreciation—we want to be seen, heard, and valued. In fact, research from Nancy Kline’s Time to Think shows that our minds work best when we feel genuinely appreciated. So, how can you master the art of appreciation? Try the 3 S’s: Sincere – Make sure your words come from a real, authentic place. Succinct – Keep it short and to the point. Specific – Be clear and explicit in your praise. Instead of just saying, "Wow, Sipho, fantastic job," try something like: "Sipho, I really appreciate how you stayed calm during that tough meeting. Your detailed presentation on the solution showed true commitment. Thank you." By following these simple steps, your appreciation will not only feel more genuine but also have a lasting impact. Reducing Time Waste by Shifting How You Conduct Meetings 🕒 Do you feel a dip in energy when you look at your calendar filled with meetings? If your meetings have become synonymous with time wastage and irrelevant discussions, it's time to reconsider how you conduct them. A well-run meeting should be a collaborative discussion that generates quality independent thinking from all members. It should be an energising experience, leaving everyone focused, dignified, and invigorated. Here are 5 key principles & actions for running effective meetings: 1. Everyone Matters Ensure everyone has a turn to speak. Start with a check-in round, allow input on agenda items, and end with a closing round. Timing each turn can help maintain efficiency. 2. Highlight What’s Going Well Begin and end each meeting with a round reflecting on what went well. For example, name one thing that went well and what was achieved successfully together. 3. Allow Uninterrupted Thought Ensure each person can finish their thoughts without interruption, even during fierce debates. 4. Encourage Independent Thinking Give people 3-5 minutes of uninterrupted time to think and share their ideas. For example, on the topic of the new product launch, what are your thoughts? 5. Challenge Assumptions Occasionally ask incisive questions to remove limiting assumptions. For example, what assumptions are we making? Which is most stopping us from moving forward? If we knew it would take an acceptable amount of time to research an option, how would we proceed? By adopting these principles, you can transform your meetings into productive, energising sessions that truly push the needle forward. • Listening by John Fox When someone deeply listens to you It is like holding out a dented cup You've had since childhood And watching it fill up with Cold, fresh water. When it balances on top of the brim, You are understood. When it overflows and touches your skin, You are loved. When someone deeply listens to you The room where you stay Starts a new life And the place where you wrote your first poem begins to glow in your mind's eye. It is as if gold has been discovered! When someone deeply listens to you Your bare feet are on the earth And a beloved land that seemed distant Is now at home within you.
