One evening, I walked through the front door, covered in ashy dust from a long day at work. There was McKenzie, my 7-year-old daughter, waiting for me with that curious look on her face. She scrunched up her nose and pointed at my dusty clothes. “Dad,” she said, “why do you get so dirty at work? You told me that if I do well in school and get good grades, I won’t have to work hard and can tell people to do the hard, dirty work instead.” She paused, tilting her head to the side, her eyebrows furrowed in deep thought. “But it looks like you’re the one doing the hard, dirty work. Did you not get good grades at school?” I tried to keep a straight face, but I couldn’t help chuckling at her logic. “Well, McKenzie,” I began, “I did get good grades at school. But even the people who give instructions need to know how to do the hard work themselves so they can be good leaders.” McKenzie raised an eyebrow at me. “So, you’re saying you chose to get dirty on purpose, Dad?” I nodded with a grin. “Exactly! I like getting my hands dirty because it means I’m learning and getting better at what I do. Plus, how else would I know the best way to make things work?” She giggled, clearly not fully convinced but enjoying the idea. “Oh, I get it! So, you’re like a mud master, learning all the tricks so one day you can tell people how to do it right?” “Yep, that’s right!” I said, laughing. “And if you keep doing well in school, maybe you’ll be the one telling me how to do things someday!” McKenzie’s eyes sparkled, and she giggled. “Okay, Dad, but only if I get to wear a cleaner overall!” We both burst out laughing, and I realized it was one of those perfect father-daughter moments that I'd remember for a long time. #WEDOITFORTHEM #PROUDDAD #INSPECTORDAD ..... 🤓 🔍 🔦 🔧 🔩 ⚙

🎙️ Navigating the Challenge of Simplifying Complexity In the world of technology and innovation, there are few things as exciting yet challenging as explaining the profound impact of initiatives like the Sasol Solar Challenge. Recently, I had the pleasure (and challenge) of speaking at the media launch of the 2024 Sasol Solar Challenge, where I needed to break down the intricacies of how this incredible event fosters STEM education in South Africa while also promoting sustainable technology and the future of mobility. As you can probably tell from the photo, I was caught in a moment of deep thought – trying to find that perfect balance between conveying complex ideas and making them accessible to everyone, especially those hearing about these topics for the first time. The key takeaway? When it comes to topics as critical as sustainability and education, it’s not just about sharing information; it’s about telling a story that resonates, inspires, and invites others to join the journey. If this picture says anything, it's that sometimes the most challenging part of our jobs isn't the information itself, but finding the right way to communicate it. 🎯 #SasolSolarChallenge #STEM #Sustainability #FutureMobility #Innovation Sasol Sasol Solar Challenge
