Five years after the tragic killing of UCT first-year student Uyinene Mrwetyana, her memory continues to be celebrated, while the battle against sexual and gender-based violence and femicide (SGBVF) continues. As the heavens opened with rain on Saturday, 24 August, during the Uyinene Mrwetyana Foundation’s (UMF) annual anti-SGBVF walk, community leaders, students, parents and observers were not deterred and showed up in their numbers under the theme: “Eliminate the fear: prioritising safety and security”. On Tuesday, 20 August, UCT hosted a Vice-Chancellor’s Open Lecture, which was delivered by Nobel laureate Professor Joachim Frank. The event, held at the New Lecture Theatre (NLT) on UCT’s upper campus, attracted a diverse audience who learned more about the revolutionary field of cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM). The lecture explored how cryo-EM has transformed the study of biological molecules. Professor Frank, a pioneer in this field, shared insights into how this cutting-edge technology has enabled researchers to determine the structure of molecules in unprecedented detail. UCT’s pharmacy manager, Asanda Ndinisa, is fuelled by a passion of improving people’s lives. The pharmacy is housed at the Student Wellness Clinic in the Ivan Toms Building. A champion of the people, an HIV/AIDS activist, an antiretroviral (ARV) treatment crusader, and a clinician with outstanding scientific prowess who remains committed to lessening the impact of HIV through passion and compassion for humanity – those were just some of the words used to describe UCT's Professor Catherine Orrell. An HIV clinician, clinical pharmacologist and the clinical lead for the Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation Centre for Adherence and Therapeutics, she delivered her inaugural lecture – marking her ascent to full professor – on Thursday, 22 August. Applications for postgraduate admission to UCT in 2025 close on either 30 September or 31 October, depending on the specific faculty or programme – except in a few instances where applications have already closed.
