This unit has made an impressive difference in the air quality of our home. I bought this Coway Airmega 150 for the new improved filter and hoping it was as quiet as the claims on Amazon (19db - 48db). Unfortunately it was louder than my Coway Airmega AP-1216L which is rated for 330 sq. ft. and essentially silent on the lowest fan speed (claims of 21db). I’m not sure but I suspect the Airmega 150 is louder because the housing is porous and because it draws in air through that porous front screen, while the AP-1216L uses larger vents. I doubt the larger Airmega 230 or 240 model is quieter. Too bad but it’s going back.

First of all, don't listen to the reviewer that said his power button didn't work on all 3 of the units he purchased-that was a bad review because he is turning it off wrong. To turn the unit on it requires only a soft, single touch-to turn the unit off it requires a soft touch but hold down the touch until it turns off (about 2-3 seconds). Anyways, l have a Bissell Air320 in my main living space which is a good unit and looks really cool but it's not meant for a bedroom because, for me, it's way too loud. This Coway is small and looks cool too and is really quiet on setting '1' which is what l set it at when sleeping. It still makes some noise but its very quiet. As far as air purifiers go it seems to do its job well. The filters fit very tight and when its on 'auto' mode it seems to sense dirty air well and fluctuates the fan speed accordingly. All in all, this appears to be a fine unit for a bedroom and I'm very satisfied...

Minimalistic and effective

I bought two 230s and 2 150s, for a 1790 square foot home. Downstairs is hardwood flooring, upstairs is fully carpeted. I have one 230 unit for all of downstairs since the dust is already minimal on that floor. A 230 in the master bedroom as it's a bigger room and typically the bigger units run quieter. I put the 2 150s into the other bedrooms that my wife and I utilize as office spaces. Upon unpackaging and setting these up (which was a total breeze by the way, documentation provided is perfect), they immediately went to work cleaning the air. The air quality sensor is extremely sensitive and the color scheme is easy to understand and the LED is bright. We kept all of our units on auto initially, and they immediately go to work cleaning the air, LEDs changing color as the air gets cleaner, the unit also getting quieter until the light is blue and the unit is whisper quiet. If the air is clean for a while the unit goes into sleep mode to save power. But as soon as we cook or do anything that may disrupt the air quality the sensors detect it and kicks the unit into gear to clean up the air. We haven't had them long enough to notice if the levels of dust have been reduced, but we can already notice an improvement in the air quality. The air is fresher and there's way less smells left lingering, especially after cooking which we do a lot of. Bacon smell was gone after a couple of hours. Maintenance seems easy enough and the company has a good reputation for support and reliability so I'm hoping these units last a good while. So far very happy and would highly recommend these if you want to clean up your air and cut down on dust and smells.

The large surface area and thickness of the filter are excellent. The unique easy in/out cleanable pre-filter makes it so easy to clean it (with a vacuum cleaner). The best for keeping clean.

I also like the colored air-quality indicator light, which can be seen and understood from anywhere in the room, but it is too bright, and turning it off is not what I want, so I had to put a white sticker over the colored light to reduce its brightness. Problem easily solved. Amazon sells the LED brightness-reducing stickers.

As with other air purifiers, the Auto mode is unusable due to going asleep automatically. I leave it set on 1, which is fine; no real complaint about that. The only thing I like about Auto mode is that it provides an auditory indication when the air has become polluted, so it would be nice if the purifier makers could figure out how to make Auto modes really work right, like not going to sleep automatically, and allowing the user to set the minimum Auto speed, and prevent the Auto from turning off the air-quality light.

They should provide a sticker to reduce the LED brightness along with the unit, so users don't have to find one themselves. Or maybe even a variable brightness setting.

Even with the small negatives, this is the best air purifier I have found for the price. I bought a second one after liking the first one. However, I also bought and use multiple Winix 5500-2 and Winix 5300-2 purifiers, because they have better air-quality sensors, and even though the Winix filters are not as large, and the Winix pre-filters are not as easy to clean, it's good to have both, because the Winix units let you know when the air is polluted way more often than the Coway does.

If you can afford it, it's better to have many air purifiers operating at low speed, than to try and rely on one for a large area operating at higher speed. The lower the speed, the better the filtration, the less often the filters need cleaning, and the lower the fan noise.

Detailed Review:
I have one of the AirMega AP-1512 (now replaced by the almost identical 200M). My choice in selecting and procuring that model was down to all the great reviews that compared the performance, power consumption, cost to buy, and cost to own of several of the top performing and popular brands on the market. There were others that outperformed the Coway, but not enough to be significant, and none were as cheap to procure and own (the running costs of the Coway were hands down less than any other brand). Having a great experience with the AP-1512, I decided to try the new 150 model to use in a smaller room (my 10’ x 10’ office), and because being confined to my house for the past year has more dust being created were I sit and work all day.

My first impressions were good. The 150 seems to be well built and has familiar features and layout to the older unit I have been using for years. One thing I notice immediately when I was unboxing the unit was that it only comes with a single charcoal foam filter, which is supposed to be changed out after 6 months, but the HEPA filter is at 1 year. This means I either have to use the foam filter for a full year or replace the HEPA filter early. I wish it would have come with 2 of the foam filters as you would get in a filter replacement pack. Outside of missing one foam filter to make it through a year (and you can only by the replacement filters as a set and not individual components), the unit is also missing any sort of convenient handle to pick up and move it (the AP-1512 has a handle on it).

After getting all the wrapping and tape off, the filters installed, and plugged into power, it fired right up and started working in Auto mode. The first thing I noticed is how quiet it is, but also how gentle the air flow is (meaning it isn’t flowing much air at low speed). There was a mild smell to it from the glue on the filters, but after a few hours (maybe a day), this all cleared up (I’ve heard some with major complaints of glue/chemical smells on the AP-1512 replacement filters, so I wasn’t overly surprised).

I noticed that after running for an hour or so, the color changing light for auto mode was off and the unit said it was in Mode 1 instead of Auto. I thought something was up, so I cycled through the different Modes (fan speeds) and back to Auto. It stayed there for a while and went back to Mode 1. I thought maybe I had a bad unit, so I read the manual to make sure I understood its operation. That’s when I found out that the manual sucks and does not have near enough information about how this unit works and I now see why there are certain questions about this unit on the Amazon product page (like which was the filters are as the label FRONT on the HEPA filter actually points to the inside of the unit, which would technically be towards the back wouldn’t it?). It turns out that the Auto mode sometimes kicks out and into a more power saving mode, and when it does this, it erroneously shows as Mode 1 (and note that when it does this, it is flowing less air and even quieter than when showing as Auto Mode with a Blue status / air quality light). When the air quality is sensed to be bad enough, it pops out of the Mode 1 and into Auto Mode, so I guess this is all normal.

As many have mentioned, this unit is pretty darn quiet, except when going into high gear. At the mid-level (Mode 2 or Green air quality light), it is a bit louder, but not too bad. Mode 3 (Yellow air quality light) is much louder, but about what I expected as the AP-1512 isn’t exactly quiet when it thinks it needs to evacuate the room of all dirty air right this instant.

After living with one of the Coway 150 for a couple of weeks, I ordered a second unit to go in another room (13’ x 13’ bedroom) and next to a cat litter box (to help with dust control and general air quality in the room). I noticed that it’s Auto Mode and lights worked the same as the first unit (confirming that I didn’t just get a bad unit). I also noticed that the fan motor was a bit noisier, so I was wondering about quality control of the parts used to make these units. After a few weeks though, the fan motor quieted down and is about as silent as the first unit I procured. These two units are working well and I would certainly think of getting another if needed or recommending one for another person; however, I would not recommend the 150 for anything other than a small room (like an office or regular bedroom). If you have a larger bedroom, living room, etc., then I would look at the 200M, 300 or 400 to cover the larger space as the 150 just won’t cut it.

We moved to newly built house so still construction has been going on around us, making our air quality poor for it’s hard to open the windows. We borrowed our friend’s Conway air purifier for a couple of weeks and really liked it. It received awards and the reviews were very positive so in addition to replacing home vent filter every month we bought this for our living room, dining area and kitchen which are in one big open space of 6-700 sqft. This works so well, easy to use, adjust to control the air when it gets more polluted. I like the different colors to help identify various pollution stages. We’ve used 2+ months and would recommend it absolutely.

Great air purifier that works with a smart plug

I purchased the Coway Airmega 230 in dove white. I was looking for an air purifier that worked with a smart plug...meaning that when you cut power to it and power it back on, it "remembers" the settings and comes back on automatically. This one does...with one small caveat.

When power is restored via the smart plug, the unit comes back on at the same fan speed as it was at when power was cut. However, the settings for the lights on the unit are not maintained. Meaning, if you have the lights turned off, when you turn the smart plug back on, all the lights will come back on. A small annoyance but overall happy with the fan speed being maintained. The video on this review shows this scenario.

I was also looking for an air purifier without an ionizer - and this one does not have an ionizer (I confirmed with Coway support before ordering).

Something else that I didn't realize before receiving the purifier was that the Sleep mode this unit has seems to use a combination of a light sensor as well as the particle sensor. Example - if the unit is on Smart mode and the room gets dark and the air particle sensor doesn't detect an increase in particles for a small amount of time, the until will automatically go into Sleep mode, which turns the fan down extremely low. When the lights come back on in the room, it automatically comes out of Sleep mode after a few minutes and goes to one of the other 1-3 fan modes. This was a nice feature for Smart mode that I didn't really see advertised / explained anywhere for this particular model (some of the other Coway models have a Sleep mode described like this which is how this model seems to function too).

The only downside so far with this unit are the lights on the top - especially the air quality light. It is extremely bright and in a dark room it lights up the whole room. It's nice you can turn the lights off though with the button on the top (you can turn just the air quality light off or all lights (including the mode lights). Not so nice they come back on after toggling with my smart plug, but I will solve this minor annoyance with some white tape.

Overall I am very happy with this air purifier - it works great, it looks great, and I have it integrated with Apple HomeKit via a smart plug. I have as "smart" of purifier as I need from a very trusted brand now.

I'm only a few weeks into using this. Really cleans the air to a very noticeable point.
I usually use smart mode and let it do its thing. It goes into sleep mode automatically, which I love.
I've only rinsed the outer filter once.
I was worried before I started using it since the Amazon driver literally threw it onto my porch and it tumbled twice. I though it would be broken. I have that on video and am reporting the driver.
It was so well packed by the manufacturer that all is fine. This is a quality product.
The instruction booklet is nearly useless but got me started. Went online for clarification. Not sure why it's so difficult to write a booklet for your own product.
I was planning to move it onto different floors in my house, but it's cumbersome to move. So I'm getting a smaller one for that purpose.
This is a higher priced unit. I've seen others that work just as well for less money. No harm in shopping around for price. Many manufacturers use all the same filters.

I got the Airmega 150 and so far it works well. For the first day I just ran it in my living room and the auto mode remained blue, but after a day I do feel as though there was a noticeable improvement in the air quality.

Today I accidentally burned something in the oven and there was some smoke in the kitchen. I brought the air purifier into the kitchen and almost immediately the sensor light went from green to yellow to red. It stayed red for a few minutes and when I came back in it was green as it had been clearing up the air more. I'm impressed that the sensor actually worked as well.
