Youth Services Manager (Librarian II)

Full Time - 40 Hours/Week – Duncan Branch Library

The Youth Services Manager is responsible for operations of the Duncan Branch Library Youth Services Team and reports to the Branch Manager.

General Duties:

·         Supervises one part-time Library Assistant and one part-time Library Page.

·         Plans, implements and directs youth educational programs, literacy initiatives, partnerships, outreach and volunteer support for the branch.

·         Collaborates with the Teen Services Coordinator to plan and implement programs and initiatives for young adults.

·         Coordinates collection development and maintenance of children’s materials

·         Makes program and collection decisions based on data, which include, but are not limited to program statistics, impact surveys, collection analyses, and system and branch-specific reports.

·         Coordinates outreach activities with Alexandria City Public Schools, the Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities, and related organizations providing Youth Services in the community.

·         Functions as building officer in the Branch Manager’s absence.

·         Weeds and updates the collection and evaluates print and digital resources.

·         Participates on system Youth Services Committee and other committees.

Reference Librarian II (Librarian II)
Full-Time / 40 Hours Per Week
LOCAL HISTORY/SPECIAL COLLECTIONS BRANCH LIBRARY

 

The Local History/Special Collections (LH/SC) Branch Library is seeking enthusiastic, tech-savvy candidates with knowledge of genealogy, historiography, and local history for the Reference Services Librarian position.  The ideal candidate will have exceptional customer service skills and dedication to serving a diverse community.  Under the direction of the Branch Manager, this position is responsible for managing and staffing the LH/SC Branch’s reference desk. This position also works closely with the Branch Manager to develop technology initiatives, plan and implement innovative programs and projects, and assists with collection development. Responsibilities include orienting staff and researchers on the use of resources in the LH/SC collection and online related to genealogy and Virginia history. This position will also be expected to assist with scanning and metadata needed for the Branch’s ongoing digitization efforts as well as fulfilling image requests from customers. The Reference Services Librarian will serve on committees within the Library, the City, and in professional associations.

 

Duties:
·         Performs administrative tasks including managing reference desk coverage, maintaining usage statistics, reviewing reference requests/responses, and fulfilling/assigning image and photocopy requests;

·         Serves as the LH/SC volunteer coordinator; liaising with the Library’s volunteer coordinator, managing volunteer projects and goals, and setting schedules for volunteers;

·         Utilizes and monitors the use of library resources, including rare books and archival materials, to respond to patron inquiries, especially complex genealogical and house history questions;

·         Creates programs, displays, subject guides, and bibliographies which highlight specific areas of the collection, such as genealogy, research methods, and orientations, and which work for general and professional audiences;

·         Presents or partners with other library branches, local and regional organizations, the LH/SC Friends Group, and City agencies to plan and present creative and diverse library programming, including genealogy speakers and workshops;

·         Reviews and recommends publications and journals which reflect the diversity and needs of the community, as well as being appropriate for a special collection;

·         Participates in scanning and metadata description of LH/SC materials;

·         Outreach tasks include working with community partners to engage with audiences from elementary school to senior citizens, and will include working with National History Day, as well as Senior Services of Alexandria;

·         Serves on a variety of committees each year;

·         Being co-located with the Kate Waller Barrett Branch Library, the position assists with reference duties on the Barrett Branch’s Information desk as needed;

·         Manages LH/SC staff in the absence of the Branch Manager;

·         Identify and assist with writing grants to support projects;

·         Works with communications to advertise/post programs on social media.

 

Skills and Abilities:
·         Excellent customer service, communication skills, and ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with coworkers, partner organizations, and the public.
·         Familiarity with reference services using a variety of print, archival, and electronic resources.
·         Ability to provide genealogical and regional history assistance.
·         The ability to navigate databases, use an online library catalog, and navigate archival finding aids.
·         Practical knowledge of access, description, security, and handling needs for library and archival materials.
·         Knowledge of integrated library systems, digital asset management systems, subscription databases, imaging software, virtual meeting software, and MS Office software. Ability to learn and train others on new software.
·         An awareness of and ability to train others in the use of national, state, and regional-level websites and digital humanities sites relevant to genealogy, historic preservation, and history.
·         Ability to learn, develop, and present programs related to genealogy, history, and emerging technologies, including promoting the use of technology in staff trainings and meetings.
·         Experience conducting outreach and working with diverse communities.
·         Some management or supervisory experience is preferred.

Sunday Librarian Substitute

The Alexandria Library is searching for a part-time Librarian. The incumbent is responsible for assisting customers at the Reference/Information Desk and providing general support for the Adult Services Department.

 

Duties:                       

  • Answers all types of reference questions using print and digital sources in an efficient and courteous manner
  • Staffs the information desk to assist library customers in person and by phone with inquiries regarding library materials and other sources of information
  • Assists customers with the online catalog, electronic reference services, and with the automated internet registration and printing

The Alexandria Library is looking for several enthusiastic individuals to join the Circulation team with the Alexandria Library.  The ideal candidates will have exceptional customer service skills and the desire to contribute to a busy neighborhood library.  Under the direction of a Circulation Manager, this position is responsible for direct customer service to patrons. 

 

Duties:

·         Register patrons for library cards, check items in/out and retrieve materials for patrons;

·         Answer questions and direct phone calls;

·         Collect fees associated with library services;

·         Assist patrons with searches, locating materials, using online databases, computers, printers, self-check machines, photocopiers;

·         Organize materials to be shelved and

·         Additional duties as assigned.

Skills and Abilities:

·         Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing;

·         Ability to work with minimal supervision;

·         Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the public;

·         Ability to bend, stoop, lift and stretch in order to manage materials

High School Diploma or GED is required; some college education is preferred.  Library Page (Page I) experience is desirable.  Physically lift and carry materials either loose or in bags/boxes weighing up to 40 pounds.  Must be able to push fully loaded book carts.  A knowledge of, or willingness to learn, library practices (including the use of computers and other technologies) is required.

Library Operations Supervisor

Full-Time/ 40 Hours Per Week

Charles E. Beatley, Jr. Central Library

 

The Alexandria Library is looking for an enthusiastic individual to lead its Central Library Circulation Team.  The ideal candidate will have exceptional customer service skills and the desire to develop new staffing and service models.  Under the direction of the Central Library Manager, the Library Operations Supervisor develops library circulation policies and procedures, while managing the circulation department of the Beatley Central Library.

 

Management Duties:

·         Provides vision and leadership for the Central Library’s Circulation Department;

·         Facilitates and plans monthly Circulation Manager meetings with the Branch Library Circulation Managers;

·         Reviews and revises system-wide circulation policies and procedures, brainstorms improvements to implements new policies, procedures, and workflows;

  • Schedules employees, approves leave requests, assigns work and special projects, reviews performance and completes annual evaluations, monitors and approves time records, provides ongoing training and feedback regarding performance and contributes to annual and long-term goals and priorities;
  • Assists in preparing job postings, interviewing, and selecting candidates for circulation positions;
  • Helps develop guidelines for circulating new types of materials;
  • Oversees management of Beatley Meeting Room bookings;
  • Conducts regular meetings with circulation staff;
  • Under the guidance of the Central Library Manager, participates in Central Library Department Head Meetings and building-wide initiatives;
  • Meets with other branch staff to recommend goals and events, as well as coordinate work;
  • Opens and closes the Central Library through opening and re-securing the building, preparing daily cash receipts for transfer and reconciling discrepancies;
  • Participates in Library committees;
  • Resolves sensitive account issues and explains library policies and procedures to patrons;
  • Performs related work as required.

Salary:  $54,184.26 - $75,957.70 Annually
