A high-profile course in an enchanting setting
The route highlights the site’s surrounding natural environment, including its rugged terrain, wooded areas and unobstructed view of the St. Lawrence River. The experience begins with ride aboard an electric golf cart along the scenic trail that runs from the hotel to the clubhouse. The wooded and mountainous trail affords a breathtaking view of the river and the region’s natural beauty.
The golf course boasts between 6,066 and 6,326 yards of bentgrass teeing greens. All three nine-hole courses are designed with sand bunkers at the front of the greens and along the fairways’ edges, as well as countless patches of trees and underbrush.
The course was inaugurated on June 18, 1925, in the presence of former U.S. President William H. Taft, who spent his summers in Pointe-au-Pic.
Putting is by far the biggest challenge on this course. Although the surface area is generous, assessing a ball’s speed and direction will be a formidable test for golfers, due to the proximity of the river and the mountain. Here, golfers will need to exercise restraint, finesse and precision.
The first fairway on the St-Laurent course, said to be forgiving due to its width, counts 482 yards, with a magnificent view of La Malbaie and its bay in the background.
Strategy and discernment are key when it comes to this par 5. For example, a long tee shot to the left side of the course will allow golfers avoid the sand bunkers and, by the same token, the precipice along the opposite side. However, they should be wary of the sand trap on the left side of the fairway, about 250 yards away.
The second shot will require golfers to carefully judge the distance to be covered, since there are no less than 14 sand bunkers scattered here and there, strategically, all along the hole. Golfers should take the pull of the river into consideration when assessing their putt. This way, their chances of making a birdie, or even an eagle, are greater.
