Packed with crunchy, sharp zing from onion, and tang and savoriness from capers, this homemade tartar sauce delivers bold freshness. Once you’ve mixed the base below, you can stir in more of whichever ingredients you most enjoy. And if you don’t like the bite of raw onion, you can soak it in cold water for 10 minutes and drain before stirring it in. Thick yet spreadable, this works as a dip, too.

Cooking Notes

I have been using a version of this smeared over olive oil drizzled salmon or haddock before I "speed cook" the fish. I use an Advantium oven, but you can roast or bakes usual. My recipe is without the pickle, just generous capers, half the mayo adding whole-fat Greek yoghurt for the other half plus course ground Dijon..parsley/dill optional. Lemon is on the side.

I add a little horseradish and sour cream.

This was delicious just the way the recipe was written.

Instead of dill pickles, I add crushed green peppercorns. Delicious!

A keeper. I used chopped scallion as I didn’t have other onions on hand. Will make, again.

I use drained dill pickle relish, replace half of the mayo with sour cream or Greek yogurt, sweet onion minced, instead of the white, which is harsh tasting. 1/2 tsp freshly grated lemon zest! Great on tuna salad sandwiches.

I add together red wine vinegar, fresh dill, chopped dill pickle, lemon juice and chopped capers, Hellmans real mayo. People have said it's the best they've had.

store bought never again and everything was in the pantry!

It's hard to find a good tartar sauce recipe, and this one is so good. Many thanks! Your tartar sauce makes me smile!

A new staple! I made this with half mayo half sour cream, and didn't have herbs to add, but everyone loved it. My husband was super judgey about the idea of tartar sauce on fried fish but ended up taking several extra scoops after trying it. I used leftovers for tuna salad as suggested and my kids said they never want meat and cheese sandwiches again, only tuna from here on out! So obviously I will be making this on repeat.

Try this with a teaspoon or more of horseradish. A nice flavor addition

It was excellent but I can see how ingredients play a role. I used Dukes mayo because, well Dukes but I can see it would work with Greek yogurt or sour cream or a combo if your diet requires. I always keep dill relish in the frig and thought about it but bubbies won out. Deelish. Now I’m looking for other things to put it on

This was fantastic! Made as is, except I used a shallot.

Love this! A tip; grating the pickles and onion on the large holes of a box grater is much faster than mincing and gives the sauce a more dippable consistency.

Delicious as written!

Made as written but with the addition of 2 tsp. horseradish. Very good result.

Excellent recipe; used it to serve next to the salmon patties.

Wonderful recipe. I add 1tsp India relish. Yummmm.

Anyone remember when Mrs. Paul's seafood came with a small packet of chopped mystery ingredients that you just mixed with mayo for instant tartar sauce. It was better than you would think.

Tarragon is a good addition.

This is delicious. My only modifications, due to supplies, were to use yellow onion and grate rather than chop it; half the amount of dill because it was dried, and about half the amount of capers because that’s all I had. Perfect tartar sauce.

If you’re in a rush the easiest home made tartar sauce is just mayonnaise and some sweet pickle relish. Even my most demanding and picky eaters like it.

Try this with a teaspoon or more of horseradish. A nice flavor addition

How I didn’t have an onion on hand when I had everything else I do not know, but cocktail onions worked in a pinch, gave a sweet note to it.

Once you’ve tried this home made tartar sauce, why would you even go back to using jarred tartar sauce or simply mixing up relish with mayo? It’s just so much tastier for crab cakes, salmon burgers or any type of fish dinner. Using good quality pickles is a must, a tad bit more capers than the recipe calls for, and definitely fresh dill creates a winner!

add some cayenne. use a spice grinder to cut pickle chips. use red onion and double mustard
