Germany's TKMS gains upper hand in Indian Navy submarine contest as Spanish partner fails to meet AIP requirements

Germany's Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS), partnered with Mazagaon Dockyards Limited (MDL), holds an advantage in the competitive bid to build next-generation conventional submarines for the Indian Navy. After recent trials, Germany's offering is progressing to the next stage, while Spain's Navantia faces criticism for not meeting mandatory requirements, particularly regarding its air-independent propulsion (AIP) system. TKMS has demonstrated its stealth capabilities, although concerns remain about the fuel cells used in their AIP system.

Over to the Indian Navy now, Germany & Spain complete AIP submarine trials

Spain and Germany completed AIP system trials for the Indian Navy's ₹43,000-crore submarines. TKMS, using new fuel cells, showcased a stealthy German 212 submarine. Navantia displayed components and conducted battery-charging trials. TKMS partners with Mazagon Dockyards; Navantia with Larsen & Toubro. Khalil Rehman confirmed tests. Indian Navy evaluates reports; future integration is planned.

Indian submarines set for indigenous edge in open seas

An indigenously developed air-independent propulsion (AIP) system, set to be fitted on the first submarine next year, will significantly increase underwater endurance. It will add stealth to conventional submarines and enhancing operational effectiveness by allowing them to stay submerged for almost two weeks. Developed by DRDO in partnership with private sector players like L&T, the fuel cell-based AIP underwent extensive trials and will be integrated onto INS Kalvari submarine during its first major refit in September next year.

India to hold trials in Spain for P-75 India submarine project by June-end

The Indian Navy is set to conduct trials in Spain for critical equipment under Project 75 India, aiming to acquire six advanced submarines with Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) systems. Spanish shipyard Navantia's Chairman, Ricardo Dominguez Garcia-Baquero, highlighted Spain's commitment to the project, including swift export clearance and technological transfer. Navantia, partnered with L&T, offers the S80 submarine design, meeting most P75(I) requirements without redesign. The trials will showcase Navantia's AIP technology, essential for India's strategic self-reliance in submarine capabilities.

Mumbai Airport Shock: IndiGo lands while Air India takes off, here's what went wrong

A close call occurred at Mumbai Airport when an IndiGo flight landed while an Air India plane was taking off, breaching the safety margin. Both airlines claimed they were following Air Traffic Control (ATC) clearances, highlighting the challenges faced by pilots and controllers in managing heavy traffic at the airport's single operational runway.
