Designed by The Economist’s senior data journalists, this course is particularly suited to anyone who needs to review, analyse or prepare reports and presentations using data, or use data to influence others. You’ll explore data visualisation, understand how to use numbers effectively to solve real problems and, importantly, learn how to spot and avoid common pitfalls.

Module 1
Narratives in numbers

Discover how to find, collect and analyse data, spot stories in numbers and avoid common errors. Understand how to develop a “data mindset” to guide better decision-making in a professional context, and how to harness data to craft a compelling narrative.

Module 2
Effective infographics

Explore and practise ways to depict different types of data to convey clear, powerful messages, reveal new insights and aid decision-making. Learn to choose and create the right chart for a specific goal and to avoid potential deceptions.

The Economist’s team of data journalists brings specialist insights to the learning experience through articles, infographics, tutor-reviewed assignments, videos and podcasts.

Teaching will be enriched by group discussions with students from many types of organisations. Larger class discussions will provide access to an even greater range of global viewpoints. Assignments and case studies are designed to stimulate and challenge, giving participants opportunities to unearth stories in data and improve their visualisation skills.
