Earlier discussion on the category "Art photographers"

The category "Art photographers" has been merged into that of "Photographers" and the talk page for "Art photographers" was then moved here. Here, out of immediate context, the talk is a little hard to understand. (For example, the first subheading is "What's this category for?", with no explanation that "this category" is something other than "Photographers".) I have therefore archived it all to Category talk:Photographers/Art photographers (merged category) and deleted it from this page. -- Hoary 07:37, 20 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Documentary photographers?

[edit]

Why is there no category for documentary photographers? Not all are "photojournalists," and not all photojournalists are documentary photographers. I think this needs to be added. Bruxism (talk) 06:55, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You're right that not all documentary photographers are photojournalists. But how could a photojournalist not be a documentary photographer? Also, I worry that such a large percentage of photographers are (in some sense of the phrase) documentary photographers as to make the latter category rather unhelpful. Where would it lead? Take Cartier-Bresson, for example; surely he was a documentary photographer. Offhand I can't think of any work by his that can't be called documentary; would he then eventually belong to a category of "French documentary photographers", which, together with a group of French [non-documentary] photographers would make up "French photographers"? -- Hoary (talk) 07:14, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I beg to differ - Cartier-Bresson is esteemed in an artistic sense, in addition to his more candid work, for his contributions to the form photography - in all its senses - has today. If anything, I would avoid trying to 'pigeonhole' a type of photographer, or even trying to categorise the same... rather, it would be better to just write an article about a photographer's notoriety, and let his work/publications mentioned therein speak for him. But to say that HCB was a documentary photographer is not to say that his contributions were limited to documentary photography. -- Hoary (talk) 07:48, 26 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Women Photographers

[edit]

Is there a reason why there has not been a category for Women Photographers? There is a Women Artists category, so a Women Photographers category seems appropriate but perhaps I've missed a previous discussion. I've started a page for this category, but it can be deleted if I've missed something. Lexaxis7 (talk) 23:48, 25 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
