Delta Tau Lambda (ΔΤΛ) is a collegiate and graduate Latina-based Greek-lettered sorority. It was founded on April 2, 1994 at the University of Michigan by Darilís García and Maria Victoria Ramos. The sorority has chartered fourteen collegiate and ten graduate professional chapters in the United States.

History[edit]

Delta Tau Lambda was founded by Darilís García and Maria Victoria Ramos at the University of Michigan on April 2, 1994.[1][2][3] Its goals are friendship, community service, encouring higher education for Latino youth, promoting unity in the Latino community, and collaborating to solve issues within that community.[1][4] That fall, it hosted the first Fuerza de la Mujer Latina (Salute to Latinas, which has become a regular event for the sorority.[5]

The Beta chapter was established in 1999 at Roosevelt University.[2] In 2003, the first graduate chapter was created for the Detroit metropolitan area.[6] The sorority continued to add chapters, growing to have a nationwide presence.[4]

Symbols[edit]

The sorority's motto is Con Fuerza construiremos, Con Honestidad creceremos, Con Unidad nunca seremos Vencidas or "Strength and Unity are the Key to Excellence".[1][7] The sorority's colors are brown, gold, surrounded by cream.[1][7] Its symbol is the African lion.[1][7] Its flower is the forget-me-not.[1] Its jewel is the diamond.[1] The principals or pillars of Delta Tau Lambda are Strength, Honesty, Excellence, Unity, and Wisdom.[1][7]

Membership[edit]

Membership to Delta Tau Lambda is give regardless of race, ethnicity, creed, sexual orientation, ability, or national origin.

Philanthropy[edit]

Undergraduate, graduate and professional members engage in community service projects and fundraising for charitable causes; service endeavors encompass both national and local efforts, including breast cancer, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, and mental health.[7][8] Many projects focus on the Latina/Latino community, including a scholarship fund.

The sorority established the Lydia Cruz & Sandra Maria Ramos Scholarship Fund in March 1995. The scholarship is named after Darilís García's grandmother and Maria Victoria Ramos' sister. The scholarship is awarded annually to a graduating high school Latina senior that will be attending a two or four-year higher learning institution or a first-year Latina student at a two or four-year higher learning institution.
