Simon Shuster (born 1983)[1] is an American journalist and author who currently serves as a senior correspondent for Time magazine.[2]
Personal life and education
[edit]Born in Moscow, Shuster moved to the United States with his family in 1989, settling in San Francisco. His early life in Russia and subsequent relocation to the U.S. significantly influenced his understanding of global affairs, particularly U.S.-Russia relations.
Shuster pursued his undergraduate studies at Stanford University, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in 2005. While at Stanford, he became interested in journalism, contributing to the Stanford Daily and later working with the Moscow Times, an English-language newspaper.
Career
[edit]Shuster's professional career began in Moscow with roles with The Moscow Times, Reuters, the Associated Press and other publications, where he honed his skills in international reporting.[3]
Shuster joined Time magazine in 2013, initially as the Berlin bureau chief, covering significant events across the European Union and the former Soviet Union. His work gained considerable attention, particularly his coverage of the Russian annexation of Crimea in 2014, where he was the first foreign journalist to arrive in Crimea following Russian occupation.[3] Over the years, Shuster has extensively reported major geopolitical issues, including the refugee crisis in the Mediterranean and Ukraine's dealings with former U.S. President Donald Trump.
Shuster’s reporting on Ukraine became especially prominent during the 2022 Russian invasion, where he gained unprecedented access to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. His book, The Showman: Inside the Invasion That Shook the World and Made a Leader of Volodymyr Zelensky, published in 2024, offers a detailed account of Zelenskyy’s rise to international prominence amidst the war. The book is based on years of in-depth reporting and interviews with Zelenskyy and his inner circle, including the months spent embedded with the president's team in Kyiv during the early months of the war.
Beyond his work in Ukraine, Shuster has been involved in discussions around the challenges of modern journalism, particularly in the context of disinformation and the impact of political leaders on the press.
Shuster’s contributions to journalism have made him a respected voice in the field. He is known for his deep understanding of Eastern European politics and his ability to bring complex global issues to a broader audience.
