King Kalakaua was elected king in 1874 following an election versus the then Queen Emma, following the death of King Lunalilo in 1873 (who was also elected, by that matter). This statement of unelected dynastic families is only partially correct, however generally speaking not true because of how King Kalakaua was elected.
