I believe this article could benefit from more information on its waning of use due to to the suggestion of elliptical orbitals as opposed to circular ones in Kepler's First Law that was proven by Isaac Newton's astronomical findings. --IndigoDeberry (talk) 05:41, 12 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

This instrument has no relationship whatsoever with the cosmological model adopted. It's simply a very simple way of determining when the sun reaches the celestial equator. Its indications would be the same if the Sun traveled around the Earth of if, for example, all planets and the Sun revolved around Jupiter or Saturn… The waning of its use was not due to the fact that Ptolemy's theory was wrong, but rather to the fact that the precise moment of the equinoxes could eventually be calculated precisely and no longer needed to be observed directly.
