Free Software

[edit]

Unfortunately, it turned out that FAAC never was Free Software, it always contained code from the ISO reference encoder that is definitely proprietary software. Nowadays, the homepage explains this (but this was only a change of the text on the homepage, the code is the same as before). CE --192.35.241.121 (talk) 09:55, 13 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Why FAAD*2*?

[edit]

Why is it FAAD2? Is it a second version - i.e. was there ever an "FAAD1"? Jimw338 (talk) 19:17, 26 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Is FDK nonfree?

[edit]

The article says: "The fifth is the (nonfree) libfdk-aac, the Fraunhofer FDK AAC library, which is purported to be a "high quality" aac implementation." Is this accurate? Unless I'm misinterpreting something, this is the license for the linked codec, and it appears to be reasonably free and open... Jesin (talk) 21:08, 31 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Very late, but I think the problem is that it can't be distributed as a binary because of patents. The license included in the source code by Fraunhofer lets the code be distributed, it even says binary distribution is allowed, but it doesn't license the patented technologies. It goes on to say that it can only be distributed as authorized by patent licenses, which significantly impacts (you might even say retracts or contradicts) the earlier statement. --Bp0 (talk) 21:15, 27 September 2014 (UTC) (edited)[reply]
By the way, there is an article for this encoder at Fraunhofer FDK AAC. --Bp0 (talk) 21:55, 27 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
