8.29.06 Update.

Several universities previously excluded were added as they had over $100 million in endowment funds. Comparison to american universities is fair. However, one must remember that the majority of the highly endowed schools are Private universities that rely on these large endowments to suppliment the missing state funds recieved at a public university. Furthermore, Canadian universities are reasonably well off compared with state schools in other countries. For example, while Oxford and Cambridge are the richest universities outside of the US, the UK's third richest school (the University of Edinburgh) is on a par with the University of Manitoba in Canada.

Article Revamp

[edit]

I changed most of the content of this article. Actually, I started writing an entirely new article, based on the American counterpart. Once I was ready to post the first draft, I discovered this article, (I had been editting under the same article name with different capitalization).
I replaced the existing version with the article I had been creating. My rationale for replacing the content was as such: the article only reflected the endowments of the G10 schools, which was a nice comparison, but didn't reflect all Canadian universities as the title would suggest. I thought it was necessary to move the G10 content to the G10 article, and make this article a little bit more objective (to this end, I eliminated from the list any school which didn't have a total endowment of over 100 million. This is quite a generous cutoff, as the American equivalent article uses 1 billion as it's cutoff). As these figures have been a source of disagreement on the main university pages, I added a section for references for each endowment figure, although the one PDF for Western actually has them all (the numbers are from 2003 though). Where available, I tried to use the most recent figures. --Greenmind 05:32, 20 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Quotes/References

[edit]

From UofT's The Bulletin:
“While our overall endowment currently stands at more than $1.4 billion,
other Canadian universities with smaller enrolments are still ahead of
us in terms of endowment per student, namely Queen’s and McGill.”

Has anyone seen the discrepancy between the articles on the endowment figures for the University of Toronto? One article [1] has UofT at $23,608 per student, whilst this article has it listed as $33,608. Any ideas on what which figure is accurate? Kyle.dionneclark 18:51, 4 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Institution Dates

[edit]

I think it would be a good idea to also give in the chart the dates each institution was formed. This may help to give some context to the endowments (Such as Toronto/McGill being older than say Waterloo). What do other people think? I'd be willing to add this myself if there is some support for it, though I'd like someone to suggest a proper column title. Kratoz 11:10, 30 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Endowment year

[edit]

It's not clear to me if the amount of the endowment changes each year or if the data that is currently on the page is for a specific fiscal year. Could someone who knows please clarify this on the page? panda 02:27, 19 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Saint Francis Xavier

[edit]

This university was left off the endowment per student list so I added them. —Preceding unsigned comment added by MedievalScholar (talkcontribs) 15:58, 28 July 2007

According to the information on Ottawa, it should be in this group too. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.230.73.50 (talk) 02:42, 9 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

disagreeing endowment figures

[edit]

The numbers on this page don't agree with all the numbers on Group_of_Thirteen_(Canadian_universities -- marked factually inaccurate —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.231.89.235 (talk) 05:00, 30 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

There are no longer any endowment figures at Group_of_Thirteen_(Canadian_universities), and the figures on this page are referenced, so I've removed the factually inaccurate flag from the top of the article -- please point out a specific number if there is still a problem. Financial Crisis = Incorrect endowments on this page

[edit]

The whole list is probably incorrect at this point, as endowments have changed drastically with the financial crisis. All universities invest large or modest portions of their endowments in the markets. Obviously, all of them have been affected, so if anyone could find the time - please find the new figures for the schools if possible. --Buffer v2 (talk) 06:48, 14 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Combined tables

[edit]

I combined tables for easier comparison and added dates of establishment as suggested. I also updated numbers where I could find them, but few school are releasing post-economic crisis numbers - I'd appreciate any help finding more accurate numbers. This article needs more recent references. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 132.206.33.162 (talk) 20:37, 27 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Looks great! —Preceding unsigned comment added by Benbenben3 (talkcontribs) 17:14, 28 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Rewrite the tables???

[edit]

The data listed are from the universities and diverse sources. My experience is that such data are unreliable, perhaps in part because institutions puff themselves up a little, and each counts differently. NACUBO has data. U.S. and Canadian Institutions Listed by Fiscal Year (FY) 2018 Endowment Market Value and Change* in Endowment Market Value from FY17 to FY18. Needs to be converted to C$.

Updates for 2021-2022

[edit]

Figures for 2022 can be added and a lot of universities have their latest financial reports out (see Queens, U of T) as of Oct 11, 2022 2601:41:4380:FAB0:F16B:E5E5:E1B8:C9C6 (talk) 05:46, 12 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
