Removal of notability template

[edit]

May Erlewine has, as the article notes, more than a dozen albums to her credit, plus credibility in regional and national circles. If you google her, you'll get a slew of hits that reflect just how notable she is. Joni Mitchell? No. Still, she's more prominent than many musicians profiled on Wikipedia who have done far less. Her father, Michael Erlewine, is of course much more notable, since he started AllMusic. That by any means wouldn't qualify May for our attention, but her work is substantial enough to get airplay on FM outlets coast to coast, including one I'm associated with.

That said, I'm removing the Notability template, because a) the text could be improved but that has little to do with the subject's importance, b) she's had at least minor attention from biggies like Rolling Stone, IMDb, and MTV, c) a refimprove or some such cleanup template might have been more appropriate, d) a talk page discussion would have helped explain exactly what's wrong (it's not obvious to me), and finally e) some editors have already taken care of a bunch of issues regarding sources and quality. If you think I'm wrong, please revert but I'd appreciate your letting me know. Thanks. Allreet (talk) 12:37, 14 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I missed the posting date of the template, this month, so I'm letting it stand. And I changed the header of this talk subject for sake of accuracy. I'm also contacting Vegantics for discussion. Pardon any rashness on my part. It's just that I think c) and d) as mentioned above woulda helped. Allreet (talk) 12:46, 14 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Allreet, If you feel that Erlewine meets the criteria for notability under WP:MUSICBIO and can make the corresponding edits to document it, I have absolutely no objection to you removing the template. Prior to my article edit, I found the tone extremely promotional in a manner that suggested it may have been written either as a paid placement or by someone with a WP:COI. (Indeed, the original article was posted with a COI template, which is suspicious but not damning.) I do not consider myself an authority on the subject and am glad to be proven wrong on this one if the citations support it.

@Vegantics: I appreciate your reply. I understand completely why you posted the template and based on what you said, your grounds are well founded, e.g., the article's original promotional tone and its origin (as suggested by the COI template). I'd add that Earthworks, the label for all of Erlewine's recordings, appears to be more regional in nature, focused on Michigan-based and other Mid-West artists. However, she has received wider attention through the sources I mentioned as well as outlets such as Americana Highways, American Songwriter, and UK's Folk Radio. So as time allows, I'll do as you've requested, but really, not with any intention to prove you wrong. Allreet (talk) 21:18, 16 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
