delete unsourced traditions and Greek life

there is no referencing for the seciton on "Traditions" and Greek lists count as WP_UNDUE, most of them unreferenced anyway. I propose large scale deletions in these areas. -- Melchior2006 (talk) 13:59, 6 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Flagship title

As NM does not have a state system there is no single flagship designation. Self designation is not relevant. See the description of flagship on Wikipedia itself. A quick news search for "New Mexico" "flagship university" (with -unm.edu to avoid picking up UNM's website) reveals plenty of sources stating that UNM is the flagship university. This really isn't in dispute. For instance, we have the governor calling it "New Mexico's flagship university"[1]. Robminchin (talk) 05:17, 22 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

There is no accepted or even well-defined definition of flagship. Even the Wikipedia article on flagship itself accepts that. In some states a flagship gets explicitly defined by the state. In others, one university is clearly the highest. In NM, as in North Dakota, this not true. We should not be a designator or a judge of status. As there is no consensus, we should adjudicate.

Moreover the self definition of flagship is sometimes use by some universities and their alumni to then make that university receive more state dollars. We should not encourage or permit that. It beneath us. Stay above the fray. 67.206.170.116 (talk) 14:07, 1 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

For Wikipedia purposes, a flagship university is a university that is referred to by reliable sources as a flagship university. This may be qualified per WP:WEIGHT if there is disagreement between reliable sources, or omitted if it is a viewpoint held only by a small minority. We're not in the business of coming up with a definition ourselves or of adjudicating, that would break the policy on WP:No original research. Robminchin (talk) 18:23, 1 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

OK, but we have lots of sources claiming that two universities in New Mexico are flagships. Why is that such a problem? Since you have no definition of flagship, it sounds like there might easily be two... -- Melchior2006 (talk) 18:33, 1 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

As you said on the NMSU talk page, the only source referring to two flagships you could find was a single Forbes article (which, as pointed out elsewhere on that page, mirrored the wording then in use on the NMSU Wikipedia article). That was the only one I could find as well. Those arguing for NMSU to be considered a flagship university have consistently fallen back on definitional arguments rather than providing sources. Meanwhile, lots of reliable sources refer to UNM as 'the' flagship university, not one of the flagship universities. Robminchin (talk) 20:49, 1 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The Forbes article was not the only one, here is another. But certainly the vast majority of reliable sources state that UNM is the flagship school and only a few others (far less reliable ones) mention NMSU as a flagship. As far as I am concerned, I would vote for UNM as flagship and delete references to NMSU as a flagship. -- Melchior2006 (talk) 07:32, 2 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
