You're invited! Smithsonian APA Center & Women in Red virtual edit-a-thon on APA women

[edit]
Asian Pacific American Women World Virtual Edit-a-thon
"The Smithsonian APA Center invites you to attend the 2nd annual Wikipedia APA an editathon for cultural presence, which will be held during the month of September 2015. We are thrilled to invite you to Wikipedia APA, an editing event for improving and increasing the presence of cultural, historic, and artistic information on Wikipedia pertaining to Asian Pacific American ("APA") experiences. The second Wikipedia editathon dedicated to APA content, this project will occur as physical events during September 2015... as well as remotely, with participants taking part from all throughout the world."
Did you Know that 15% of the biographies on Wikipedia are about women? Not impressed? WiR focuses on "content gender gap". If you'd like to help contribute articles on women and women's works, we warmly welcome you! WiR will be hosting one of this world virtual edit-a-thon. The 3-day event will focus on improving Wikipedia's coverage of Asian Pacific American women and their works (books, paintings, and so on).

--Rosiestep (talk) 13:11, 4 September 2015 (UTC)

Char, if you are aware of any notable American women from India, or books they've written, paintings they've painted, with missing articles, please consider adding them to this editathon page. I hope you consider joining in this weekend if you have some free time. --Rosiestep (talk) 13:11, 4 September 2015 (UTC)

  • @Rosiestep: Thanks for the invitation. I will be free during the weekend but in Bangalore. Can I join on line and how?--Nvvchar. 13:38, 4 September 2015 (UTC)
  • Yes, join online; we all will. This meetup is "virtual"; none of us are meeting in person! It's for everyone who wants to participate in the Smithsonian meetup but isn't near Washington D.C., New York, Los Angeles, San Diego, or the other cities hosting an editathon at an physical location. Add any new articles started in the Outcomes section of our event's page (I think there are already 2 articles listed). Glad to work with you on this. This will be fun! --Rosiestep (talk) 13:56, 4 September 2015 (UTC)

Uttanka

[edit]

In response to your request for a copy-edit of the article Uttanka at WP:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors/Requests, I have just read and reviewed the article. You'll see that I made quite a few minor edits. I think it reads better now. I wanted to ask you about something. When you first introduce "gurudakshina", and once or twice after that, you have it italicized, but later, as in Uttanka#Ashvamedhika Parva, and in a caption, you don't have it italicized. I think it is all right to italicize it once, when you are introducing the term, but then use Roman (regular) font after that. If you prefer that it be italicized throughout the article, several more instances of the word need to be changed to italics.

At the beginning of the second-to-last paragraph in Uttanka#Adi Parva, you have this sentence:

  • Uttanka then wondered whether he could reach his guru's ashram to hand over the earrings to the guru's wife before the prescribed time.

It's not clear who "his guru" was. I guess his first guru was Veda, but then he got another guru. I presume this is the second one, but I think it should be made clear here.

I enjoyed reading the article. I just wonder if there is a way to make it clear whether Uttanka is considered by most Hindus, or most Indians, to have been a real, historical person or a legend in which Uttanka is presumed to be simply a character, or some combination of these two. The same with Veda. Was he a real person who lived a long time ago or just a character in a legend? (You can see I know nothing about Hinduism, so these are things that can be made a little clearer to a non-expert general reader.) Let me know if you have any questions. Corinne (talk) 21:25, 6 September 2015 (UTC) I just went back and re-read the beginning of the lead, and I realize that it says "in Hindu mythology", and there's a link there, so I guess that's enough. Corinne (talk) 21:55, 6 September 2015 (UTC)

@Corinne: Thank you very much for the excellent editing. I have maintained italics for gurudakshina throughout the article. I have also clarified the sentence as "Uttanka then wondered whether he could reach his guru Veda's ashram to hand over the earrings to the guru wife before the prescribed time." The character of Uttanka and others in the article are part of the Mahabharata epic which is Indian mythology.--Nvvchar. 01:00, 7 September 2015 (UTC)
Nvvchar, I just saw that there are still two places in the article where "gurudakshina" is not italicized, one where the link is and one in a caption. Are you sure you really need to italicize it each time throughout the article and that just the first mention is not enough? BlueMoonset What do you think? Corinne (talk) 00:24, 8 September 2015 (UTC)
I don't think the ping is working from my talk page. Did you see the discussion at User talk:Corinne#Uttanka? See especially the questions I posed to you near the end of the discussion. Corinne (talk) 14:35, 10 September 2015 (UTC)

Hi, there was too much detail on two temples for the main article so I've condensed and created articles. Can you add the books in the bibliographies? Trying to find something on education and sport now.♦ Dr. Blofeld 08:56, 11 September 2015 (UTC)

Can you confirm In 1861, Dwarakadheesh Temple??? was renovated . I gather you mean that temple? Also a citation and ideally some extra text needed for the bridge.♦ Dr. Blofeld 07:22, 12 September 2015 (UTC)

  • Fixed a reference. Added text to bridge.

Source 3 also a dead link, ref 20 is unresponsive, and source needed for "the existing temple is dated to 16th century" in temple section.♦ Dr. Blofeld 07:31, 12 September 2015 (UTC)

  • @Dr. Blofeld: Both ref 3 and 20 are live on my computer.

Lighthouse

[edit]

Hi Char, I think there's an error in your lighthouse/postage stamp article Minicoy Island Lighthouse, [4] There's other lighthouses which have been featured in stamps.♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:47, 12 September 2015 (UTC)

@Dr. Blofeld: Please see this reference[5].--Nvvchar. 16:31, 12 September 2015 (UTC)
Where does it mention being the only postage stamp though?♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:38, 12 September 2015 (UTC)
  • Please see this reference [6]. Can I post it for GAN?--Nvvchar. 16:43, 12 September 2015 (UTC)
Well, obviously it is an error because there's photographic proof in [7] of Indian stamps of other lighthouses! Perhaps the source was written before 2012 or they simply got it wrong. It needs to be fixed either way as somebody has pointed out the error at Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2015-09-09/Op-ed.♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:51, 12 September 2015 (UTC)
