Non-formal education

[edit source]

As an aspiring autodidact "polymath", I am pleased to find that there is a department for us at Wikiversity. [1]

I had the good fortune of having missed out (due to WWII) on formal education. Janosabel (discusscontribs) 12:54, 18 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

You were born in 1937. That war broke out in 1939. Your formal education could have started later; the war ended when you were 8. How did that time influence your life? Tidro (discusscontribs) 19:21, 9 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
In late 1940 when the bombing of Budapest started I was sent to my maternal grand parents without my mother. At age of four, that felt like being abandoned by my mother. This made me "shut down" for the duration of primary and secondary schooling. Janosabel (discusscontribs) 21:51, 9 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Formal education is a misnomer

[edit source]

Education, in the original sense of the Latin verb educere ("to lead out"), is the opposite of formal education. So schooling or training is the correct term that denotes F E. Janosabel (discusscontribs) 13:29, 18 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Decentralise education?

[edit source]

Following the lead of the previous topic, what kind of changes could take place in the "education" system? Janosabel (discusscontribs) 13:39, 18 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Taking education out of the spheres of politics and business interests?

[edit source]

A large body of academic opinion shows that, currently, general education has some questionable side effects on the malleable minds of younger generations.

Environmental concerns

[edit source]

Janosabel (discusscontribs) 16:23, 30 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Environmental concerns are big issues indeed, but we need to make a difference between big issues — however serious — and core issues.

This preamble is to support the well documented problem solving mode: the solution of a problem lies in the full understanding of its nature.

Babel

[edit source]

Greetings, would you be interested in adding Babel information to your user page? It is not mandatory, just useful. My Babel information as an example: {{#babel: cs|en-3|de-2|sk-1|ru-1}}. --Dan Polansky (discusscontribs) 10:58, 1 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the suggest.
How is it useful? I understand it has something to with Java. But I am not tech-savvy at all. Janosabel (discusscontribs) 23:03, 1 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
I believe it's a template that people use to show others what languages they speak. I only know English, so I don't bother with the template myself. AP295 (discusscontribs) 00:31, 9 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Reform: a "progress-neutral" concept

[edit source]

Reform can mean a regressive transformation of states of affairs. Making changes without proper understanding can lead to regressive transformation of states of affairs. It is crucial to understand underlying causal factors before implementing reforms. For instance, the introduction of Universal Credit by reforming the Department of Work and Pensions was a regressive reform that lacked a thorough understanding of the consequences.

The rise of credit economy in history is a perfect example of how change can happen over time. Although money lending was prohibited by the Catholic Church in the Middle Ages, it gradually became necessary for global trading by the 17th and 18th centuries, after major land enclosures in the 15th century. Understanding the underlying causal factors can help us anticipate and prepare for changes that will eventually lead to progress. Without understanding underlying causal factors, a problem at hand can be only trans-formed into its different possible versions. Janosabel (discusscontribs) 12:35, 4 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Subminimal pages

[edit source]

To my mind, the pages you have created are less than minimal and should not have been created, except perhaps in the user space:

The pages meet deletion criteria from WV:Deletion: "Resources may be eligible for proposed deletion when education objectives and learning outcomes are scarce, and objections to deletion are unlikely." Since, one learns precisely nothing from these pages, and they do not have anything like at least approximately defined scope. --Dan Polansky (discusscontribs) 20:30, 31 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Can I then move this to my user space? How?
The other day I found a page talking about mentoring for newbies. but now I can not find it. Janosabel (discusscontribs) 20:42, 31 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
There is a button More > Move in the skin I am using, which is Vector legacy. The button may be elsewhere in your skin; you have to look around the options offered by the interface.
When creating more pages like that with no usable content, you may create a page e.g. at User:Janosabel/Subject 5. --Dan Polansky (discusscontribs) 20:48, 31 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. I found the Move button but there is a warning about using the feature "drastic and difficult undo..." Not doing it. Janosabel (discusscontribs) 21:22, 31 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
checkY Done All pages are moved, please check User:Janosabel/Holistic knowledgebase and their subpages. MathXplore (discusscontribs) 03:44, 1 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. But I hope you meant User_talk:Janosabel/Holistic_knowledgebase

Hello,
Please help me instead of accusing me of vandalism. I am trying to learn to create subpages for a future project. OK, you told me to do this learning in the Wikiversity Sandbox. Will do so from now on.

Thank you.

Janosabel (discusscontribs) 00:43, 6 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
You can also use the draft namespace or your userspace if needed. I hope this can help your project. MathXplore (discusscontribs) 00:49, 6 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you.
Just to explain: I am an 87 year novice in using Wikiversity functions and struggle to understand even basic explanations. Hope I can use "the draft namespace on [my] userspace if needed". Janosabel (discusscontribs) 01:05, 6 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
The draft namespace is the place for pages that start from "Draft:" (as explained in WV:NS/D). Your userspace is the place for pages that start from "User:Janosabel/". Does this make sense to you? MathXplore (discusscontribs) 01:18, 6 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Yes I understand this, with much appreciation.
Janosabel (discusscontribs) 01:47, 6 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Just a courtesy note.
You helped me over a learning hurdle: User:Janosabel/sandbox/subSubpage 1 Janosabel (discusscontribs) 10:46, 6 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
We can use software with which you can express yourself more freely. Tidro (discusscontribs) 19:25, 9 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

How to create userpages

[edit source]

Your user pages have to start like User:Janosabel/, otherwise they will be user pages of other users. The recent user pages that you created were named wrongly, so I have renamed them (special:redirect/logid/3402258, special:redirect/logid/3402259), you can now see them at User:Janosabel/sandbox/subSubpage 1/2/3/4 and User:Janosabel/sandbox/subSubpage 1/2/3/. Please be careful in the future. MathXplore (discusscontribs) 11:09, 10 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, again. I thought I was creating my experiments safely in my sand box... Janosabel (discusscontribs) 11:42, 10 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
Have I used "Use:User:..." as header? Just want to know where I went wrong... Dare I try to create ".../5" correctly ? Yes, and it seems to have worked. Janosabel (discusscontribs) 12:30, 10 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
