The Medical School does not provide academic advising or counseling. As all members of our Admissions staff are involved in screening applications, we are unable to review applications or provide advising services.

The following resources are recommended for application preparation:

Schedule an appointment with a member of the Admissions team to answer any application and/or admissions questions! Due to the length of appointment times, please come prepared with questions. You will receive a Zoom link 24 hours prior to your appointment time. We strongly encourage you to attend an Information Session prior to scheduling an appointment.

Shadowing Class Lectures

Interested in shadowing a current medical school class? The Office of Admissions will be offering a select number of seats across a select number of in-person classes for prospective students and/or applicants to shadow a current medical school class. UMN Pre-Health Resource Center's Health Careers Fair

The UMN Health Careers Fair is an opportunity for pre-health students at the University of Minnesota to connect with UMN health degree programs (undergraduate, graduate, professional) as well as a wide variety of departments, groups, and organizations that will help them build their portfolio of experiences for application. In addition to the health degree programs, other exhibitor categories include pre-health student groups, departments on campus that provide valuable support or opportunities, and community organizations that have volunteering, internship, or employment opportunities in the area of healthcare, public health, etc. The 2024 Career Health Fair will be held Wednesday, October 9, 2024 at Coffman Memorial Union Great Hall from 12:00 - 3:00 p.m.

UMN Graduate School Diversity Office Graduate Programs Fair

The 2024 UMN Graduate Programs Fair, hosted by the Graduate School Diversity Office will take place on Tuesday, October 15, 2024 from 1-4 PM in Coffman Memorial Union - Great Hall on the Twin Cities campus.  Registration is free and open to all Twin Cities and Duluth graduate and professional programs, graduate student organizations, and graduate academic/professional support units.

This is a great opportunity for junior and senior students who are interested in pursuing a graduate degree to learn more about the graduate programs offered at the Twin Cities, Duluth and St. Cloud campuses.

Reapplicant Workshops

Refer to the Applicant Self Assessment Guide for information on the 9 competencies evaluated during the admissions process. Reapplicant workshops will be held in Spring 2025.

In order to be considered for admission to the University of Minnesota Medical School MD program, all applicants must fall under one of the following at the time of submitting their application: 

1.) A U.S. citizen

OR

2.) An individual with a permanent resident visa (green card) or a Minnesota resident with Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) status.

Additionally, ALL applicants must:

• Hold a baccalaureate degree or graduate degree from a college or university in their country of origin or from an accredited college or university located in the continental U.S. or Canada.
• Complete all medical school prerequisite course requirements at an accredited U.S. or Canadian college or university by July 1 of the year they matriculate.
• Submit the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) within the past 3 years. A minimum MCAT score of 495 is required to receive a supplemental application.

Applicants must complete the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT). The MCAT is valid for three years prior to the application year. The oldest MCAT considered for the entering class of 2025 will be January 2021 through August 24, 2024.*

Applicants must complete seven prerequisite courses at an accredited U.S.-based or Canadian college or university by July 1 of the year they matriculate.

The University of Minnesota MD program conducts a holistic review of applications within a competency based evaluation framework. Throughout their application and interview, applicants must present evidence of the University of Minnesota Medical School Competencies for Entering Medical Students.

• August 24: Last accepted date to take the MCAT*

• October 1: MD AMCAS application deadline
• October 15: MD AMCAS transcript deadline
• October 30: MD supplemental application deadline

FEBRUARY 2025

• February 20: Applicants holding more than one acceptance should begin using the “Plan to Enroll” option in the AMCAS Choose Your Medical School (CYMS) tool

APRIL 2025

• April 15: MD deferment request deadline
• April 30: Applicants holding more than one acceptance can now select  “Commit to Enroll” in the AMCAS Choose Your Medical School (CYMS) tool

JULY 2025

• July 1: All prerequisites must be completed for matriculating students

Financial aid is offered to help students meet educational expenses and may consist of loans, scholarships, or work-study. Our Medical School Financial Aid Office is available to assist students with the financing of their medical education at [email protected].

Applicants should review the Residency and Reciprocity Handbook or contact the Residency Classification Office at [email protected] to determine if they are a legal Minnesota resident and eligible for in-state tuition.

Please note that the Office of Admissions does award a small pool of recruitment scholarships that range from non-resident tuition waiver scholarships, full-tuition scholarships, half-tuition scholarships, and donor scholarships. These scholarships are awarded on a rolling basis beginning in January.

• Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) strengthens the world’s medical care by supporting the spectrum of education, research, and patient care activities conducted by its member institutions.

• AAMC Aspiring Docs program offers inspiration, information, and support to future students.

• Health Disparities & Cancer Research Summer Internship is a nine-week paid internship and full-time position designed to give participants hands-on research experience, mentorship, and academic and professional development.
