Proposals for closing projects/Closure of Swedish Wikiversity

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

This is a proposal for closing and/or deleting a wiki hosted by the Wikimedia Foundation. It is subject to the current closing projects policy.

The proposal for closing sv:v: is rejected and the project will be kept open.

Users have already added a sitenotice that says Swedish Wikiversity is no longer active. Langcom considers this as a "soft closure" as used to be done in the past. --MF-W 15:29, 11 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I am requesting a closure for several reasons.

  1. There is practically no one who is editing on the project. A few years ago we used to have some users who were active but now there is no one and the last one has not edited since October 2020.
  2. The project does not have a single local admin. It used to have an admin but he has not edited on Wikiversity since 2016 and got his rights removed in July 2019. I saw a spam article a while ago that I had to report to Global sysops/Requests.
  3. I checked recent changes a while ago, sorted out the log actions and saw four edits, three of them were user page creation and one was a mass message delivery by a bot.
  4. A look in the creation log shows that there are no pages created since October 2020 that are not vandalism, spambots or user page creations.
  5. The project is full of spambots and vandalism that no one on the project is taking care of. I checked today and I found five vandalism edits laying for over two days which no one had reverted.
  6. The speedy deletion category sv:v:Kategori:Snabba raderingar has pages laying for over a year, untouched.
  7. On the adminship request page, there are two votings that has been laying for years. The oldest one is from 2014 (!)

We had a discussion on the project where six people supported the closure of Swedish Wikiversity. There was a discussion on Swedish Wikipedia too, where no one was against this action either and we removed Wikiversity from the Wikipedia-sisters page. I think, with all these reasons, that we should close Swedish Wikiversity. A project that just has spambots that no one is going to take care of in a long time, if ever, isn't good advertising for WMF. It's sad to close the project but now it feels like it's just a failure. We can open the project again once there are one or more people that want to take care of the project. EPIC (talk) 18:04, 21 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

On point 6, EPIC, if you don't count the edits where {{radera}} was inserted, on the first page, the last edit was from 2 December 2014 at 15.14 (lying around, untouched for 6 years until the template was added. This also demonstrates points 1, 2 and 4. AnotherEditor144 t - c 08:07, 24 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose

[edit]
  • Oppose - The content is still in use even if not being edited at the moment (I know teachers that use it as a resource). We have a user that has volunteered to become a local admin and take responsibility for cleaning up spam and vandalism, with that a lot of the problems EPIC rises will be fixed. This project has been going up and down in activity earlier too, with a soft closure the possibility for renewal, more content and active users in the future, is much more likely. //Vätte (talk) 10:00, 15 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose if someone is willing to become admin. SelfieCity (talk) 11:51, 19 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose as a concrete proposal for fixing the problems mentioned has been made and so closure would be premature in my view, Atlantic306 (talk) 23:20, 19 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose per closure policy, inactivity is never a reason to close a wiki and appropriate measures are in place to prevent bot vandalism. As said if there is no "absence of content" I don't see how it should be closed. Perhaps a soft closure would be doable though. WikiAviator (talk) 07:27, 8 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose per Closing projects policy: "Inactivity in itself is no valid reason" and there is no "absence of content since the wiki's creation". We have the Small Wiki Monitoring Team to deal with spam and vandalism. I have not been able to identify unacceptably large amounts of unambiguous spam or vandalism on the Swedish Wikiversity. It might be possible to quickly expand this wikiversity with material from wikiskola.se, which appears to be larger and has a compatible creative commons licence. I am unable to believe that a wikiversity in an official language of Sweden and Finland with more than 10 million native speakers and 3 million L2 speakers will remain permanently inactive after this request is closed. • Oppose. It's not empty, it has signs of stable activity in a past, it's just temporary dormant. I hate the idea that the Swedish-speaking community, one of the most active language communities of the WMF projects, will always be indifferent to the project. We just need a sysop who's going to react quickly on spam/vandalism, it's the only critical issue here. That inactivity issue will be solved somewhen. --Wolverène (talk) 12:21, 22 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
