On Wednesday, September 4, 2024, Silicon Valley Rainbow Rotary is pleased to host Eddie Green (he/him) who will talk about his experience growing up in the South as a gay person and the many struggles along the way in the late 70s and early 80s. He will talk about being an entertainer and dealing with AIDS in the early 80s and surviving cancer, all the many issues as one gets older and of the struggles losing his eyesight and how he is fulfilling his life by building community.
About the speaker
Eddie was born in rural Georgia and exhibited a natural flair for entertainment from a young age. As a small boy, he delighted in impersonating icons like Cher and Barbara Eden from "I Dream of Jeannie," dreaming of a life on stage. Fast forward, Eddie's path led him to become an exotic dancer, a career that surprisingly evolved into performing with life-sized puppets. His unique talents graced stages across the Atlanta area and later in California, culminating in a memorable performance on America’s Got Talent.
Amidst his burgeoning career, Eddie embarked on a deeply personal journey of self-discovery and acceptance, coming out in environments that were often unwelcoming. He found sanctuary and acceptance in the vibrant communities of nightclubs and the drag queen stage, where he could fully embrace his true self.
In recent years, Eddie has shifted his focus toward fostering community and support for older LGBTQ+ individuals. He leads a group for people living with HIV, helps facilitate the Vintage Lunch at the Billy DeFrank LGBTQ+ Community Center, and coordinates the Avenidas Walking Group, an activities group for LGBTQ+ seniors. Eddie’s dedication to creating inclusive spaces reflects his enduring commitment to authenticity and community.
