Oh-So-Slight Relief From Heat Wave In Store For Westwood

LOS ANGELES, CA — The Southland's lingering heat wave will hang around another day before giving the region a brief respite. But the cooler temperatures won't last long as the ridge of high pressure causing the heatwave will boomerang back after heading east for a few days.

Slightly cooler temperatures should prevail for most of the week, but Saturday will be another scorcher, according to the National Weather Service.

The ridge of high pressure that has lingered over the Four Corners region, causing the heatwave, will move eastward toward the Oklahoma Panhandle this week, but then turn west once more, causing temperatures to ramp up at week's end, with Woodland Hills hitting 100 Saturday, said National Weather meteorologist Kristen Stewart.

In the meantime, temperatures will be at near-normal in several communities, but above-average in others. Woodland Hills and Saugus are forecast to hit 96 Monday, but Burbank will be 89, 1 degree above normal, Stewart said.

Antelope Valley temperatures will be above 100, but that's normal for this time of the year.

The Southland's second heat wave of Summer 2019 began a week ago Monday and a clear end date isn't obvious as of Monday morning.

The NWS forecast partly cloudy skies in much of L.A. County Monday but sunny skies in the valleys, and highs of 76 degrees in Avalon and at LAX; 82 on Mount Wilson; 84 in Downtown L.A. and Long Beach; 89 in San Gabriel and Burbank; 92 in Pasadena; 96 in Woodland Hills and Saugus; 102 in Palmdale and Lancaster.

Sunny skies were forecast in Orange County Monday, along with highs of 73 in Newport Beach, Laguna Beach and San Clemente; 83 on Santiago Peak; 84 in Fullerton; 85 in Irvine and Ortega Canyon at 2,600 degrees; 86 in Mission Viejo; 87 in Yorba Linda and Anaheim; 88 in Fremont Canyon; and 89 in Trabuco Canyon. Roughly similar temperatures will prevail until an uptick Friday.

Forecasters urge Southland residents to take measures to safeguard themselves and others in the heat, including remaining well-hydrated, wearing light-colored, lightweight clothing, staying out of the mid-day sun, checking on friends and relatives, particularly the elderly, and never leave people or pets in hot cars.
