Evacuations Lifted After Murrieta Brush Fire Knocked Down

MURRIETA, CA — Firefighters Sunday were investigating the cause of a brush fire in Murrieta that prompted evacuations and a freeway closure.

The fire was reported at about 1:45 p.m. Saturday along the east side of Interstate 215 between Los Alamos and Clinton Keith roads, according to the Murrieta Police Department.

An immediate evacuation order was issued for the area east of I-215, west of Whitewood Road and north of Los Alamos Road. An evacuation warning was issued for the area east of Whitewood Road, west of Ruth Ellen way and north of Los Alamos Road. I-215 was shut down to traffic between Los Alamos Road and Clinton Keith Road.

Firefighters were able to knock down the fire just after 2 p.m. Saturday, according to the Murrieta Fire Department.

The evacuation orders were lifted by 4 p.m. Saturday and Whitewood Road was reopened. One lane on the northbound I-215 was opened at the same time, and the freeway was fully opened later.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known, and the fire department said there was no indication that the 72-acre Alamos fire, which broke out on Friday in the same area, was related to the fire that burned Saturday.
