NOVATO, CA — Family, friends, colleagues and neighbors are mourning the unexpected loss of Nick Zolli, a former corporal with the Novato Police Department who had retired after 16 years of service in the city.

"Our hearts go out to everyone who knew him, and we offer our sincerest condolences to his family, friends, and all his peers at the department," the department wrote Monday. "Nick will always be a part of the NPD family and will be missed tremendously."

Police officials said Zolli worked as an officer, corporal, field training officer, Peer Support Team member and mental health liaison during his time in Novato and encouraged community members to pitch in to help out his family with funeral costs and other expenses.

A GoFundMe page created in his memory had raised nearly $7,000 by Tuesday afternoon, but more donations were welcome to help get to the $30,000 goal.

The fundraiser's organizer remembered Zolli for his years of service, including talking down someone experiencing a mental crisis from an overpass, which earned him a Medal of Merit in 2019.

"Nick spent his career caring for and helping others, and now it is our turn to give back in his honor," wrote Lauren Houser, the fundraiser's organizer. "Your support will not only ease the financial hardships but will also serve as a meaningful tribute to the life and legacy of a man who dedicated himself to serving the Novato community."
